Dennis Rodman’s Early Life
Dennis Rodman was born in Trenton, New Jersey, on May 13, 1961. He was the third of Julie and Philander Rodman Jr.’s five children. Philander Jr. was an Air Force veteran who had several jobs, including a stint as a prison guard. Julie worked as a nurse and later as a teacher. The family struggled financially, and their home was often without heat or running water. Julie and Philander divorced when Dennis was just three years old, and he went to live with his father.

Dennis Rodman was born in Trenton, New Jersey, the son of Shirley and Philander Rodman, Jr., who was a U.S. Air Force staff sergeant during the Korean War. He has two sisters, Debra and Kim. When he was very young, his father left his family, then returned to them when Dennis was 11 years old. His mother died of breast cancer in 1993. In his 2014 autobiography, Bad As I Wanna Be, he revealed that his father physically abused him as a child; on one occasion, Philander broke Dennis’s head open with a broomstick. Dennis rebelled against his father by refusing to go to church and getting bad grades in junior high school.
In 1957–58, Dennis attended Edison Junior High School in Detroit, Michigan. He then transferred to South Bend Central Catholic High School in South Bend, Indiana, where he tried out for the basketball team but was cut because he had poor grades and was too short at 5’6″ (1.68 m). Eventually Rodman’s stepfather sent him to live with relatives who helped tutor him so that he could re-enter Catholic high school; he graduated from now defunct Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket, Rhode Island in 1977.

Rodman claimed in his autobiography that after he rebelled against his mother by acting out at age 13, she threw him out of the house and he became homeless for a time; however, in an interview with the Chicago Tribune in 1998, she denied this claim. He later admitted that he had lied about being homeless in order to get on the basketball team at Willmington Prep School in Wilmington, Delaware.
In a 1996 episode of VH1’s The Listmakers entitled “Biggest Badasses”, Dennis Rodman came in second place (behind Ozzy Osbourne) as the “Most Outrageous Badass”.
