Before You Begin

In order to safely dispose of Paint Spray Cans, it is important that you understand the types of paint spray cans and how to properly dispose of them. This will ensure that you are following the proper safety protocol and not putting yourself or others at risk.

Read the Label

Before you begin, be sure to read the label on your paint spray can. Some products may require special handling or equipment for safe disposal. Your county or city may also have specific regulations for the disposal of paint spray cans. Once you have determined that it is safe to proceed, follow the steps below to properly dispose of your paint spray can.

Gather the Required Materials

In order to safely and effectively dispose of your paint spray cans, you will need to gather a few materials. You will need:
-A well-ventilated work area
-Protective gloves
-A screwdriver or other sharp object
-A marker
-A sealable container
With these materials on hand, you will be able to properly and safely dispose of your paint spray cans.

Preparing the Paint Can for Disposal

Before you can dispose of a paint spray can, you need to make sure that it is empty and clean. If the can is not empty, you can dispose of it by taking it to a hazardous waste facility. If the can is not clean, you can clean it with water and soap.

Remove the Lid

To get started, remove the lid from the paint can. If the paint is still wet, you can do this by simply unscrewing the lid. However, if the paint has dried, you will need to use a can opener to cut through the dried paint before you can remove the lid. Be careful when removing the lid so that you do not cut yourself on the sharp edges of the can.

Once the lid is off, set it aside in a safe place. You will need to dispose of it separately from the rest of the can.

Empty the Paint Can

It is very important to make sure the paint can is empty before you dispose of it. If there is any liquid paint left in the can, it will be classified as hazardous waste. Hazardous waste disposal facilities are expensive, and many cities do not have them.

The best way to make sure the paint can is empty is to use it until it is completely gone. However, this is not always possible or practical. If you need to dispose of an empty paint can, there are a few things you can do to make sure it is truly empty.

-Open the can and pour the contents into a larger container such as a five gallon bucket. Use a funnel if necessary.
-Leave the can upside down in the larger container for 24 hours to make sure all the paint has drained out.
-If there is still paint in the bottom of the can after 24 hours, drill a hole in the bottom of the can and allow the remaining paint to drain out.
-Once the paint has drained out, remove the lid from the can and throw it away. The metal body of the empty paint can can be recycled at most recycling facilities

Rinse the Paint Can

If the paint can is empty, pour some water into it and swish it around to rinse out any residual paint. Drain the water and then remove the lid. If the paint can is full, you will need to empty it before rinsing. Place a tarp or drop cloth on the ground and then tip the paint can over so that the paint pours out onto the tarp. Once the can is empty, rinse it out as described above.

Disposing of the Paint Can

After you have used up all the paint in a spray can, you need to dispose of it properly. Here is a guide on how to do so.

Recycle the Paint Can

In most cases, you can recycle your paint cans. Most recycling facilities will want the paint cans to be empty, but some may accept them with a small amount of leftover paint. Call your local facility to see their specific requirements. Once the can is empty or nearly empty, remove the lid and let the can dry out completely. You may have to leave it open for several days. Once it’s dry, you can recycle it with your other metal recyclables.

Place the Paint Can in the Trash

Paint cans filled with paint or other materials are considered hazardous waste and should not be placed in the trash. Most local governments have special days or sites where residents can take hazardous wastes like paint for proper disposal.

Before disposing of your paint cans, make sure they are completely dry. To speed up the drying process, remove the lid and set the can on its side in a well-ventilated area. Once the can is dry, place it in your trash cart on your regular trash day. Be sure to mark the can as “empty” with a permanent marker so that collectors will know it can be safely disposed of.
