Outer space Wonders: Upcoming Celestial Activities In 2023

Have you ever come across a beautiful galactic picture? If you have, you would believe us when we say that nothing can be more beautiful than the galaxy and outer space. The unimaginable vastness, the ever-expanding distance, the feeling of being minuscule and the feeling of being nothing yet being a part of such great planetary workings. There is so much to say, think, explore and deliberate about galactic activities that 100 years of life seems mere seconds. If you celebrate outer space wonders, we bring you the list of Upcoming Celestial Activities in 2023 that you should definitely not miss on.

Celestial activities are events that occur when comets, in addition to solar, lunar and planet events, occur near the Earth’s inner solar system and thus, become visible in the night sky. The beauty of these celestial wonders is loved and celebrated like festivities.

So now, let’s cover all the upcoming celestial activities in 2023 that are going to grace us with their ineffable allure.

January 3, 4 – Quadrantids Meteor Shower

2003 EH1’, that was discovered back in 2003. This celestial activity is an annual event, witnessed between Jan 1-5.

Though the lighter & farther meteors are blocked by the full moon, if you are patient, you will be able to observe the most beautiful upcoming celestial activities in 2023 from Jan 3 midnight to Jan 4 early morning.

April 20: Ningaloo hybrid solar eclipse

Fast forward to April; the first solar eclipse graces the list of upcoming celestial activities in 2023. This wonder occurs when the Moon is too close to the Earth and can’t completely block the Sun, thus creating a hybrid solar eclipse. This eclipse’s path will start in the Southern Indian Ocean and follow across parts of Western Australia and Southern Indonesia. So, most parts of Australia and Indonesia will be able to witness a partial eclipse on this day.

April 22, 23 – Lyrids Meteor Shower

In the list of upcoming celestial activities in 2023, the Lyrids Meteor shower is the second meteor shower. It’s an average shower compared with Quadrantids Meteor Shower, with 20 meteors per hour at its peak. Occurred due to dust particles left behind the C/1861 Thatcher comet. It’s also an annual shower, occurring between 16-25 April. You can watch this meteor shower best from 22 April midnight to 23 April early morning this year, when the crescent moon will set early, leaving a dark night sky for the perfect view.

May 5: Penumbral lunar eclipse

When the Moon passes the Earth’s partial shadow, also known as Penumbra, we get the first lunar activity in the upcoming celestial activities in 2023 list. During this eclipse, the Moon will darken slightly, and this phenomenon can be observed throughout all of Australia, Asia and the Eastern parts of Europe and Africa.

May 6, 7 – Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower

The third meteor shower coming to dignify the listing of upcoming celestial activities in 2023 is Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower. It’s an above-average meteor shower producing over 60 meteors per hour at its peak (in the southern hemisphere). In the northern hemisphere, this rate goes from 60 to 30 meteors per hour. Produced from dust particles left in the wake of the Halley comet. This shower is witnessed annually from April 19 to May 28, and it’s best this year can be observed from May 6 midnight to May 7 early morning.

June 21 – June Solstice

Occurring at 14:51 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), the June solstice is among the upcoming celestial activities in 2023 that mark a season change. On this day, the North Pole will be tilted towards the Sun (the northernmost position in the sky & directly over the Tropic of Cancer), marking the first day of the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.

July 3 – Full Moon, Supermoon

The first out of four supermoons of 2023 will occur on July 3. Also known by names like the Buck Moon, the Thunder Moon and the Hay Moon, it’s among upcoming celestial activities in 2023 where the Moon will be fully illuminated. Also, the Moon will be at its closest approach to the Earth, which will give the Moon a larger, brighter and unusual appearance.

July 28, 29 – Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower

In the list of upcoming celestial activities in 2023, this is the 4th meteor shower with 20 meteors visible per hour at its peak. This shower occurs due to dust particles left by the Marsden and Kracht comets. It’s an annual shower observed from July 12 to August 23, where its peak will be seen this year from July 28 night to July 29 early morning.

August 1 – Full Moon, Supermoon

The second supermoon gracing the upcoming celestial activities in 2023 list will be witnessed on August 1st. This moon is also known as the Sturgeon Moon by the native Americans, as large Sturgeon and other fishes were easily caught this time. Other names of this supermoon are the Green Corn Moon and the Grain Moon.

August 12, 13, 14: Perseids meteor shower

If you love to watch meteor showers, the Perseids meteor shower is out of the best showers in the list of upcoming celestial activities in 2023. This shower is produced by debris left from the comet Swift-Tuttle (discovered in 1862). It’s an annual meteor shower noticed from July 17 to August 24, and this year you can observe it best from August 12 night to August 13 early morning. This celestial activity is a beautiful event where around 60 meteors per hour can be visible at its peak.

August 31: Supermoon, Super blue moon

There are two definitions of the blue moon, and on August 31 2023, you will be able to behold the first and only super blue moon as among the most awaited celestial activities in 2023. The first definition of a blue moon states- the occurrence of a supermoon within a month is called blue moon. In contrast, the other definition states the occurrence of a slightly bluish moon due to dust particles and light rays in the atmosphere. Nonetheless, it will be worth witnessing.

September 29 – Full Moon, Supermoon.

The last of four supermoons on the list of upcoming celestial activities in 2023 can be observed  on September 29. It is also called the Corn Moon by early American natives as its corn harvesting time of the year. Also known by names like the Harvest Moon, this supermoon comes nearest to the September Equinox (Sept 23, when the day and night will be nearly of equal length across the world).

October 7 – Draconids Meteor Shower

October, November and December can be called hubs of upcoming celestial activities in 2023, with two meteor showers each. First, the Draconids meteor shower on Oct 7 is produced due to the particles left by the 21P Giacobini-Zinner comet (first discovered in 1900). It’s a rather unusual shower which can be best viewed during the evening instead of at night. The annual time of this shower is 6-10 October, and will grace us on Oct 7 night this year.

October 14: Annular solar eclipse

The first solar eclipse of the upcoming celestial activities in 2023 list will be witnessed on Oct 14. During this time, the Moon will be too far from the Earth to fully cover the Sun, resulting in a ring of light around the Moon. This eclipse will begin at Southern Canada’s off-coast Pacific Ocean and move towards Central America, Columbia, Brazil and the South Western part of the United States. Most parts of North and South America can behold a partial eclipse.

October 21, 22 – Orionids Meteor Shower

The second meteor shower of October in the upcoming celestial activities in 2023 is the Orionids meteor shower. It’s an average shower in which 20 meteors per hour at its peak can be observed. Produced by the debris left by the Halley comet (the same cause of the Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower), it is annually observed between Oct 2 to November 7. This year, you can observe it from Oct 21 midnight to Oct 22 dawn.

October 28: Partial lunar eclipse

To watch one of the most astonishing upcoming celestial activities in 2023, mark the date Oct 28. When the moon passes the Earth’s partial shadow and only part of it is covered by Earth’s darkest shadow, the umbra, it is called Partial Lunar Eclipse. This celestial activity will give the moon a crescent moon shape, which will be observed throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and Western Australia.

November 4, 5 – Taurids Meteor Shower

With only 5-10 meteors per hour, the Taurids meteor shower is a minor celestial activity in 2023. However, what makes it worth watching is its two streams, the first produced by Asteroid 2004 TG10 dust particles, and the second stream is produced by debris left by the 2P Encke comet. This annual celestial activity occurs between Sep 7 and Dec 10, and this year it will look most spectacular from Nov 4 night to Nov 5 early morning.

November 17, 18 – Leonids Meteor Shower

The list of upcoming celestial activities in 2023 is coming to an end, and the Leonids meteor shower is the third last shower of the year. It’s an average shower with about 15 meteors per hour at its peak, which is produced due to dust particles left by the Tempel-Tuttle comet (discovered in 1865). The most interesting thing about this meteor shower is that after every 33 years, it reaches a cyclonic peak where around 100 meteors per hour can be observed.

December 13, 14: Geminids meteor shower

One of the best upcoming celestial activities in 2023, the Geminids meteor shower, can win the crown. It’s called the king of meteor showers, with about 120 colour meteors per hour at its peak. It happens due to the debris left by the 3200 Phaethon asteroid (discovered in 1982), every year between Dec 7 to 17. This year, you will be able to witness this magnificent heavenly activity from Dec 13 night to Dec 14 early morning.

December 21, 22 – Ursids Meteor Shower

This is the last out of 11 meteor showers in the upcoming celestial activities in 2023 list, with approx 5-10 meteors per hour at its peak. This shower is produced by the dust grains left by the Tuttle comet and is observed every year between Dec 17 and 25. So, go to a dark place on the night of Dec 21 and enjoy the last meteor shower of 2023.

December 22 – December Solstice

The list of upcoming celestial activities in 2023 ends with December Solstice on Dec 22. This event will occur at 3:21 UTC when the South Pole of the earth shifts towards the Sun (reaching the Southernmost position in the sky & directly over the Tropic of Cancer). This day will mark the first day of the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of the summer solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.
