Madame Web Movie Review: Marvel Best Movie of the Year

Madame Web, also known as Cassandra Webb, is a fictional character featured in Marvel Comics. Her debut was in The Amazing Spider-Man No. 210, released in November 1980, and she was brought to life by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr. She is commonly portrayed as a supporting character in the Spider-Man comic series, depicted as an older woman with myasthenia gravis, linked to a life support system that resembles a spiderweb.

The Film is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is the fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), but it is not directly connected to the other films in the franchise.

Madame Web Review

Madame Web Review: Cassie, a paramedic with a heroic profession, grapples with her past as an orphan. Raised in a foster home, she yearns for the concept of a blissful family. Cassie holds resentment towards her late mother’s adventurous spirit, who ventured into the Peruvian Amazon while heavily pregnant with her. Her mother’s pursuit of a magical spider venom with healing properties led to unforeseen consequences.

After a life-altering near-death experience, Cassie unexpectedly gains the extraordinary ability to perceive the immediate future. Embracing her newfound power, she dedicates herself to using it for the greater good, just like any friendly neighborhood superhero. However, as she navigates her newfound abilities, Cassie finds herself thrust into a perilous mission to protect three young girls from a formidable adversary determined to eliminate them.

The story is a simple one, focusing on the introduction of actress Dakota Johnson as the Marvel superhero Madame Webb in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Director S. J. Clarkson effortlessly brings this to life, ensuring that the story, written by Kerem Sanga, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless, is executed with minimal complexity. While this superhero suspense thriller serves as a teaser to acquaint us with Madame Webb’s superpowers, it falls short of truly wowing the audience. The screenplay fails to give the character unbridled power, resulting in a slow build-up of suspense and some predictable chase scenes. The action is satisfactory at best and the excessive placement of Pepsi Cola advertising is woven into even the most crucial scene in the climax.

Dakota Johnson delivers a strong performance as the clueless superwoman, but the writing lacks depth to fully showcase her talent. Nonetheless, this charming blue-eyed brunette is easy to cheer for. The three young actresses Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, and Isabela Merced, portraying the future superwomen Julia Cornwall, Mattie Franklin, and Anya Corazon, embody a variety of stereotypes. What sets them apart is that the wealthy, spoiled character is portrayed by the black girl, while the two white girls come from less privileged backgrounds. While their regular personas are adequate, their superhero costumes make them look like exaggerated caricatures. Tahar Rahim’s portrayal of the greedy and power-hungry Ezekiel Sims lacks any backstory to justify his actions, leaving his profession unexplained. All we know is that he is a wealthy and paranoid individual who naively believes that setting up a surveillance system in his home will solve all his problems. The attempt to inject a sense of family into the story with Cassie’s colleague O’Neil (Mike Epps) and his pregnant sister-in-law Mary Parker (Emma Roberts) feels half-hearted.
