Now, Apple Passkeys Can Be Securely Shared

Take advantage of the new ios 17 feature to avoid repeatedly texting your Prime Video password to someone.

Safely Sharing Passwords can be tricky, but there are reliable solutions like 1Password that can help. These tools encrypt the data during transfer, ensuring privacy. Avoid sharing passwords through regular messages or email, as they can be accessed by anyone if they’re in plain text.

With the latest ios 17 and Macos Sonoma updates, Apple has addressed this issue by introducing the cloud Keychain feature. It enables the generation of a set of passcodes and passkeys for Shared access within a group. This feature requires all members to be using ios 17. You can keep your personal accounts separate in your own secure vault. The sharing of passwords remains protected with robust end-to-end encryption facilitated by iCloud Keychain, thereby providing protection against potential man-in-the-middle attacks.”

Apple Passkeys Can Be Securely Shared.

This group-based feature is designed for sharing multiple passwords with friends or family. It’s not ideal for one-time password sharing, but you can create a group with just one other person for that purpose too.

An effective strategy is to establish distinct categories for your loved ones, such as family and close friends when making the most of this functionality. You can easily create and manage multiple groups. With your family, you can share passwords for tax software, bank logins, or streaming services. For your friends, it’s useful for keeping all the logins for shared Netflix, Prime Video, or other streaming accounts in one place. It can also come in handy for sharing Google accounts when working on group projects.

Here’s how to share passkeys in ios 17:

01. Go to Settings > Passwords.

02. Tap the Plus button and select New Shared Group.

03. Create a unique name for your collective and assemble the individuals you wish to incorporate.  Each member can add or remove their own passwords.

04. Choose the login details you want to include in the shared group.

05. Tap the Move button.

06. Select the “Notify Via Messages” option and send the invites using iMessage.

You can manage the group anytime from the Passwords screen. Add new passwords to the shared group using the Plus button. To remove a password from the shared group, press and hold an account, choose Move to Group, and select My Passwords to bring the login back to your account only. You can also create a new entry directly in the shared group by tapping the Plus button, instead of moving an existing password..
