Ultra Wideband Market Size 2022 Global Research, Business Strategy, Company Overview, Share, Expansion Devices, New Product Promotions and Growth Analysis, Size forecast to 2031

The Ultra Wideband Market is expected to register a CAGR of 18% during the forecast period. Some of the major factors that are driving the growth of the market include the increasing deployment of the UWB technology in various mobile devices, the rapidly rising demand of the technology in Real-time location systems, and the increased adoption of the Industrial Internet of Things.

– Ever since the ruling of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States opened up the spectrum from 3.1 GHz – 10.6 GHz for the ultra-wideband (UWB) applications in the year 2002, the interest in the usage of the UWB technology for localization outside of the military applications has grown exponentially. The multi-purpose nature of the technology for localization and also high or low data rate communication make it a robust and attractive tech in many indoor applications.
– In the early 2000s, the UWB technology was witnessing limited usage in the military sector in their radars and covert communications and was used briefly as a form of medical imaging, such as in the remote heart monitoring systems. The adoption primarily lagged until recently when the commercial interests have begun exploring some potential uses.
– The technology is now being increasingly used for applications such as real-time location services (RTLS). Companies such as Apple, have patented the usage of UWB with beacons (called iBeacon), that are small battery-powered sensors which can be attached to objects and broadcast a signal, which then an enabled UWB device can use to estimate the distance between two objects down to a few centimeters for the location services.
– Moreover, in Nov 2019, NXP Semiconductors, one of the world’s prominent provider of automotive semiconductors, announced an addition to its UWB portfolio with a new automotive UWB IC. The technology is primarily designed to give spatial awareness to the UWB-equipped cars, mobiles, and other smart devices, in order to enable cars to know exactly where the users are.
– Further, it became apparent earlier that the social distancing is going to be the key strategy in combating the spread of the coronavirus. Lopos, which is a spin-off of imec and the Ghent University, in efforts to fight this virus, launched a wearable device called SafeDistance, that is based on the UWB technology, chosen over Bluetooth owing to its accuracy. After successful pilots at multiple companies in the chemical, metal and construction industry, the company said that it is now scaling up the device to mass production. The device warns employees through an audible or haptic alarm, when they are violating the social distancing guidelines while approaching each other.

Key Market Trends

Automotive and Transportation Segment is Expected to Witness Significant Growth

– The UWB technology has been investigated by multiple research groups for its applications in various vehicle-related scenarios, such as its application is being used as a parking guide, vehicle localization module as compensation of GPS, intra-vehicular networks, and cyclists tracking.
– The technology when integrated into smartphones is capable of enabling newer functions, such as secure passive entry. The technology will complement the existing short-distance radio standards in the keyless vehicle access. It also helps to avoid unauthorized access via relay attacks thereby making the keyless vehicle access much more secure by pinpointing the user’s location up to a few centimeters.
– Moreover, the vehicle radar manufacturers are slowly moving from 24 GHz to 77 GHz primarily owing to the regulations that have been put forth by various governmental agencies such as the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). The new regulations state that the 24 GHz frequency range will not be available for a bandwidth of 5 GHz, called as the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for automotive applications after 2022 as mandated by both the agencies.
– Further, in Jun 2020, Continental received new production orders for its CoSmA smartphone-based vehicle access system from multiple vehicle manufacturers from the European and Asian region. The smartphone-based car key will be integrated into the architecture of their upcoming vehicles. The company will begin the production in 2021. The CoSmA primarily uses ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology for an access solution that offers a hands-free system and enhances anti-theft protection.

North America is Expected to Hold a Significant Market Share

– The North American region is anticipated to hold a significant market share of the UWB market primarily owing to the presence of multiple UWB players in the region and the rapidly increasing adoption rate of UWB-based technologies across multiple sectors such as healthcare and retail.
– The North American region was one of the earliest adopters of RTLS. The increasing trend of automation is one of the primary factors governing the growth of the RTLS industry in this region.
– This is majorly due to the early adoption of digital technologies across multiple industries, which helps to eliminate human intervention and huge investments in asset management, inventory and warehouse management, and transportation and logistics management.
– Moreover, the commercial usage of the ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is being granted increased exposure owing to the special features it offers such as centimeter-level accuracy of positioning and high data rate. The applications of the technology in guideway transportation industry has also been developed in the region.
– Furthermore, technological advancements in the positioning accuracy of the UWB technology coupled with the gradually falling price of the UWB chips are also anticipated to drive the market in region over the forecast period.

Competitive Landscape

The Ultra Wideband market is highly competitive owing to the presence of multiple vendors in the market operating in domestic and international markets. The market appears to be moderately concentrated with the major players adopting strategies such as product innovation, mergers, and acquisitions in order to widen their product portfolio and expand their geographic reach. Some of the major players in the market are DecaWave Limited, NXP Semiconductors, Texas Instruments, among others.

– Aug 2019 – NXP Semiconductors N.V. and Volkswagen unveiled their first concept car utilizing the ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, showcasing the major benefits of the technology, which is the ability to combat relay theft protection, that is one of the biggest problems with the keyless entry systems in modern cars.
– Feb 2020 – Qorvo, a provider of innovative RF solutions announced that it has completed its acquisition of Decawave, a player in ultra-wideband (UWB) technology and provider of UWB solutions for mobile, automotive and IoT applications. With the acquisition, Decawave team become the Ultra-Wideband Business Unit (UWBU) within Qorvo Mobile Products.
