David Hartlerode Struck, Killed by Car on Florida Avenue at New Chicago Avenue

 
VALLE VISTA, CA (October 24, 2023) — David Hartlerode died in a pedestrian accident on Florida Avenue at New Chicago Avenue.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the pedestrian accident happened around 6:50 p.m. Saturday. Under unclear circumstances, a 56-year-old Hemet man driving an eastbound Honda sedan at 35 to 40 miles per hour struck Hartlerode, of Valle Vista. Subsequently, the driver pulled over and waited for paramedics and officers to arrive.
 
Minutes later, Riverside County Fire Department paramedics responded to find Hartlerode with fatal injuries. Investigators learned that the accident happened as Hartlerode tried using a designated crosswalk across Florida Avenue. However, traffic investigators did not say who had the right of way.
 
Following the accident, police screened the driver for possible alcohol or drug impairment, but neither was linked to the crash. If anyone can help traffic investigators with this deadly accident, please call the CHP.
