Good Samaritan Dies after Rescuing Mother and Child from San San Joaquin River During Car Crash

 
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA (October 13, 2023) – Eddie Gerardo Cervantes Lora died while helping to rescue a mother and her 5-year-old daughter from the San Joaquin River Tuesday afternoon on October 10.
 
According to the CHP, the woman was driving a GMC on the San Joaquin River Bridge just before 1:30 p.m. when she steered the SUV to the right down an embankment and hit a tree. The car then went into the river.
 
Two people spotted the pair standing on top of the sinking SUV and jumped into the river to help. One of them brought the child to shore safely.
 
Cervantes Lora attempted to rescue the woman, but the woman went under the water.
 
A short time later, the woman was washed up on shore alive but badly injured.

Officials were able to revive the woman, and took her and the child to a hospital.
 
Cervantes Lora did not return to the surface, officials said.
 
Dive crews searched for him on Tuesday and again Wednesday morning before finding his body.
 
A San Joaquin County Coroner said Cervantes Lora was a 41-year-old Manteca resident.
 
A GoFundMe started to give financial support to Cervantes Lora’s family, including for a funeral.
 
CHP said on Wednesday that the driver who was rescued remains in the intensive care unit.
 
Investigators continue piecing together how the tragedy happened.
