Late Evening DUI Crash in Oceanside Kills 12-Year-Old Boy and Sends Four Others to Hospital

 
OCEANSIDE, CA (July 9, 2023) – Santiago Gaspar was killed in a DUI crash in Oceanside late Tuesday evening on July 4.
 
The fatal crash happened around 11:00 p.m. on North Myers Street at Surfrider Way. According to the Oceanside Police Department, 20-year-old Edward Minot Jr. was driving a white Volkswagen GTI with no lights on near Mission Avenue and Myers Street. He failed to yield and immediately sped north on Myers Street at a high rate of speed.
 
Seconds later, Minot’s car broadsided a blue Nissan Altima that was traveling east on Surfrider Way.
 
Gaspar, a 12-year-old boy and passenger in the Altima died at the scene.
 
The Altima’s driver, 27, and another young passenger, Gaspar’s younger brother who is 6, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The two passengers of the Volkswagen also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
 
Paramedics transported all four patients to a local hospital for treatment.
 
Police suspect that both alcohol and speed were a factor in the crash. They arrested Minot of Mill Spring, North Carolina, on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
 
Minot is a Marine with the 1st Maintenance Battalion.
