Idyllwild Woman Dies after Crash with Drunk Driver on 15 Freeway near Camino Del Rey

 
ESCONDIDO, CA (June 29, 2023) – Dena Madgel Friedman Van Slyke died in a DUI chain-reaction crash in Escondido Saturday afternoon on June 24.
 
The fatal crash happened around 5:48 p.m. on 15 Freeway at the Camino Del Rey overcrossing. According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, the victim was a passenger of a Subaru SUV driven by her husband. The Subaru was traveling north on the highway.
 
A northbound Mercedes sedan, driven by 28-year-old Alejandro Rivera, traveled across multiple lanes of traffic and collided with the Subaru.
 
The impact caused the Subaru to collide with a Tesla. Both vehicles veered off the freeway and down an embankment. The Subaru overturned several times and landed on its side.
 
Friedman Van Slyke suffered blunt force injuries and died at the scene. She was 67 years old from Idyllwild.
 
The victim’s husband suffered major but non-life-threatening injuries.
 
Meanwhile, Rivera sustained minor injuries. Authorities said he was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. They arrested him and booked him into the Vista jail on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI.
 
Rivera faces a maximum sentence of nearly 15 years. His bail is at $300,000.
