Bishan Singh Bedi Controversy

Bishan Singh Bedi, a prominent figure in Indian cricket history, found himself entangled in several controversies during his time as the captain of the Indian cricket team.

One of the notable incidents occurred during the 1976 Test series against the West Indies.

In response to India’s record-breaking run-chase in the 3rd Test, the West Indies decided to employ an aggressive four-man fast bowler attack in the 4th Test.

Bedi objected to their tactics, particularly the dangerous practice of bowling beamers, as it seemed they were struggling to dismiss Indian batsmen.

In protest, Bedi declared the Indian first innings closed prematurely after two players were injured, and the repercussions were evident as five players were absent and injured in the second innings of the match.

In the England tour of India in 1976–77, Bedi accused English cricketer John Lever of using Vaseline to polish the ball during the Third Test in Madras illegally.

Lever had Vaseline strips on his forehead to prevent sweat from entering his eyes, a move he was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

Another controversial incident involved a One Day International against Pakistan in Sahiwal, where India needed 23 runs from 14 balls with eight wickets in hand.

Displeased with the continuous bouncers bowled by Sarfraz Nawaz and the umpires not calling them wide, Bedi withdrew the Indian batsmen from the crease and conceded the match in protest.
