At the 2020 GirlBoss Awards, the 18-year-old, now in her first year at Victoria University of Wellington, received the Trailblazer award.

Dao-McLay had never considered a career in politics, but after becoming involved in a campaign to lower the voting age, she wondered, “If not me, then who?”

McLay stated that she grew up surrounded by the media and was aware of the various challenges her generation would face in the future at an early age.

The GirlBoss Awards, now in their fifth year, recognize and encourage girls and women aged 11 to 18 to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, math, entrepreneurship, and leadership.

Gina Dao-McLay fought for a lower voting age of 16 to the Court of Appeal

Gina Dao-McLay, co-leader of Make It 16, wants to decrease the voting age to 16. 

Last year, the Make It 16 campaign in Wellington failed to persuade a judge that the present voting age 18 is discriminatory on the grounds of age.

Only Parliament has the authority to modify the law, but a ruling that it was discriminatory could have aided the argument.

Make It 16 co-leader Gina Dao-McLay said the group would now take their appeal to the Court of Appeal in August with the help of pro-bono lawyers.

They want 16- and 17-year-olds to be eligible to vote in the next local government elections, which will take place on October 8, 2022. In 2019, 42 percent of New Zealanders cast ballots.

The Wellington University student, who voted for the first time in the general election last year, said she learned about civics and politics by conducting her research.

The Make It 16 movement argued that local government actions impacted kids as much as adults.

She also stated that housing decisions will have an impact on students both now and in the future.

The campaign also intended to circulate a petition and wanted to be heard before a select committee.
