Early Life and Childhood

Jose Maria Yazpik was born in Mexico City, Mexico, to Dr. Jose Maria Meza and Cristina Yazpik. His father was a gynecologist, and his mother was a professional housewife.

Jose Maria spent his entire childhood in Mexico City until he was 12 years old, when he and his family moved to San Diego, California, with his family. The family tried to establish themselves in a secure position by moving about frequently, but they kept failing.

Yazpik ultimately had to take up odd jobs and debt to finish his study. After graduating high school, he moved to Tijuana, Mexico, to attend law school. However, during his first year, he realized that he preferred acting to law school and applied to Mexico’s most prestigious acting school.

Yazpik’s perseverance paid off, and he successfully established himself as an actor. After appearing in a few average soap operas, he got his big break in 1998 with his role in La vida en el espejo (1999), where he played a polemical, straight-looking homosexual role.

Career

Yazpik decided to change jobs after realizing that acting was his true calling while pursuing a law degree as an undergraduate. He initially appeared on the big screen in 1995 in the TV series “La Paloma” after graduating from Televisa’s Centro de Educación Artstica (CEA).

Jose Maria Yazpik was then seen in “Cancion de Amor” (1996), “The Final Call” (1996), and “Pueblo Chico, Infierno Grande” (1997). (1997). He proceeded to make only cameos over the following few years despite having several parts to his name, including roles in the TV shows “Angela” (1998), “La vida en el espejo” (1999), and “Todo por amor” (2000).

When he was chosen for a prominent role in the drama-romance film “Cara o Cruz” in 2001, he experienced his big break. Unfortunately, the sitcom was only modestly successful, and he appeared in 55 episodes as Armando Pescador.

When movies offered him a bigger platform to display his talent, Yazpik began concentrating more on them in 2002. In the television film “Fidel,” he debuted playing Camilo Cienfuegos (2002). In the years that followed, there were films like “Speak to Her” (2002), “The Blue Chamber” (2002), “Tiro de Gracia” (2003), and “Sin Ton Ni Sonia” (2003).

In Hugo Rodriguez’s action comedy “Nicotina,” he also played a supporting part and starred in the film. Yazpik played Joaqun in this popular film, co-starring with Diego Luna, Marta Belaustegui, and Rosa Mara Bianchi.

In Sebastián Cordero’s blockbuster film “Cronicas” from 2004, he played Ivan Suarez. The critically praised film “Innocent Voices” and the short “Pata de Gallo” included him. He played José Isabel in the fantasy “Las vueltas del citrillo” and Pancho in the Renée Chabria drama comedy “Sueno” the following year. He debuted in the Carlos Bolado mystery, “Only God Knows,” in 2006. 

Subsequently, he made cameos in “Matapájaros,” a short film, and “Un mundo maravilloso,” a comedy-thriller. For many more years, Yazpik remained a successful supporting actor. He appeared in a variety of films, including “Borderland” (2007), “Por Siempre” (2007), “Dusk” (2008), “The Burning Plain” (2008), “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” (2008), “Walking Vengeance” (2008), “Abel” (2010), and “The Attempt Dossier” (2010).

As Santa Anna, he made his television debut again in 2010’s “Gritos de muerte y libertad” series. He continued to take on roles with deeper depth during the following several years, including those in the films Morelos (2012), Colosio: El asesinato (2012), I’m So Excited (2013), I Don’t Know Whether to Slit My Wrists or Leave Them Long (2013) and Fighting for Freedom (2013). 

In the 2014 Ernesto Contreras drama “The Mysterious Spring,” in which he portrayed Igor/the husband, he made his breakthrough in the movie industry. The film was a box office success and received overwhelmingly positive reviewer reviews. It received numerous nominations at various film festivals as well. At the Miami Film Festival in 2015, Yazpik and the actors earned the Grand Jury Award.

Yazpik gained worldwide recognition after appearing in the films “Mr. Pig” (2016), “Everyone Loves Someone” (2017), “El Futuro que viene” (2017), and “Mamartuile” (2017).

He left a lasting impression when he starred in four episodes of the well-known criminal thriller “Narcos” as Amado Carrillo Fuentes. In the 2018 Mexican spinoff “Narcos: Mexico,” he later played the same character again. Eight episodes of the show featured his appearance.
