David Shaul, her agent, confirmed the tragic news.

In a statement, Shaul indicated that Fletcher died from “natural causes” without providing any further information.

Estelle Louise Fletcher passed away at her home in Montdurausse, surrounded by her family.

Over the past few decades, Shaul has worked with Fletcher, who lived in a converted 300-year-old farmhouse. Apart from that, she also owned a residence in Los Angeles.

Shaul said, “France was her favorite place on the planet; she built a home in a beautiful place that she loved. She was a great woman – what a career.”

Following a lengthy break from acting to raise her children, Fletcher won an Oscar for her second movie.

“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” featured Jack Nicholson as a new patient at a mental hospital. Fletcher plays the role of Mildred Ratched, an authoritarian, controlling nurse in the film.

During her Oscar acceptance speech, Fletcher thanked her co-stars from “Cuckoo’s Nest.” After that, she acknowledged her deaf parents, watching her at home, using sign language.

As she expressed to them, “I want to say thank you for teaching me to have a dream. [Finally], you are seeing my dream come true.”

In 1975, this film won five Oscars, including Best Picture, director Milos Forman, best-adapted screenplay, actor Nicholson, and actress Fletcher.

As a result, her character became one of cinema history’s greatest villains, ranking No. 5 on the American Film Institute’s list of the greatest villains.

However, in terms of popularity, the film falls behind Hannibal Lecter and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Fletcher’s role has inspired a spinoff series, the Ryan Murphy TV series “Ratched.”

Similarly, “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” also featured Fletcher as a continuing actor.

Additionally, she played Helen Rosemond in the 1999 film “Cruel Intentions,” as well as many other roles in movies and television shows.

Her most recent television appearances include the Netflix comedy series “Girl Boss” and the show “Shameless.”

Her two sons, John and Andrew Bick, along with her sister, Roberta Ray, and a granddaughter, will miss her deeply.

In 1959, Fletcher married Jerry Bick, and the couple divorced in 1977.
