The Difference Between Medium and Self-hosted Blogs

Writing on Medium is easier.

I write on many different platforms, including self-hosted websites and Medium profiles and publications. And I will not beat around the bush — writing on Medium is easier.

The thing about Medium is that it likes stories, so I can simply talk about anything in any way and it will be read by other users. People expect authenticity, so there is less pressure.

If you write on a website, which costs a few dollars to keep up and running, you need to ensure that you are writing about topics that other people and Search Engines will like.

And the topics need to be related to the industry the website is in. You can’t write just about anything that comes to your mind because there is a niche. Also, it must be reader-focused.

You are paying for the domain name, the hosting, the SSL certificate, and maybe a website developer to manage it. Website owners are looking for a return on their investment.

I will not say one is better than the other because it depends on your goals. In my case, I am an Seo Specialist, so having websites that are ranking on search engines is beneficial for my career.

I am trying to rank Medium stories on search engines, too, but that is not a priority. It would be a great addition to my portfolio if it happened, but I use Medium mostly to connect with people.

I am not on social media, and guest posting on Medium publications is easier than on other blogs, so I am simply taking advantage of the platform. It wants to be taken advantage of after all.

It was also my dream to be an editor-in-chief, so I am creating publications to make that dream come true. But still, that is not a priority. I am doing it as a hobby.

For me to get clients, I need a website that perfectly shows what I am capable of because all of my clients want a website that perfectly shows what they are capable of so they attract their own clients.

Again, I am an SEO specialist, and my job involves websites. I need to have a ranking website for them to believe me when I say that I can rank their website.

If you are not an SEO specialist or a website developer, and you just want to have a platform — a free platform — where you can share your knowledge and experiences, Medium is great.

The readers are already here, so all you need to do is to create an account and give them something to read. You don’t even need to design your profile before you start posting.

The Medium post editor is easy to use compared to WordPress, and that is one thing that I like as well. The interface is clean and everyone’s profile looks the same, so your writing is really what matters.

You can be a Medium member for $5 per month if you want to read unlimited stories published by other users. But if you don’t want to pay anything, that is also fine.
