Ramesh Bidhuri of the Bharatiya Janata Party has come under heavy criticism over his use of religious slurs against Bahujan Samaj Party lawmaker Danish Ali. Speaker Om Birla issued a warning if such offences repeat, while also issuing a show cause notice to Bidhuri from South Delhi.

Ramesh Bidhuri, a two-time MP and longstanding member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has been affiliated with their student outfit since his childhood. While in college he served on the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which formed part of RSS. Later he was elected central councillor at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College as well as Executive Council at Delhi University.

Bidhuri first entered electoral politics during the 1993 Delhi assembly polls by contesting the Tughlakabad seat but lost. He unsuccessfully ran in 1998 before winning the Tughlakabad seat in 2003 election. Bidhuri again unsuccessfully ran from the Tughlakabad seat before winning it back again in 2008.

Bidhuri returned from Tughlakabad to the South Delhi seat but lost it to Congress’ Ramesh Kumar; he went on to regain it during the 2014 and 2019 general elections, although with some controversy amidst his past performance and an earlier defeat.

Ramesh Bidhuri has come under intense criticism over his controversial remarks in the past. Below are a few instances of this happening.

1. Bidhuri caused outrage last month when he described Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as a dwarf, posting on X: “Well said Dwarf Duryodhan! Due to just three days of rain in Delhi, all roads became lakes and there have been crores in scams by making rooms at schools while the so-called World Class Mohalla Clinic has become a haven of animals and alcoholics – @BJP4Delhi”
2. In 2015, five women MPs including Ranjeet Ranjan (Congress), Sushmita Dev (then with Congress), Supriya Sule (NCP), Arpita Ghosh (Trinamool Congress) and PK Sreemathi Teacher (CPI-M), had lodged a formal complaint against Bidhuri for abusing them in parliament. They accused Bidhuri of abusing them by lodging an official complaint with then Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan accusing Bidhuri of abusing them inside parliament.
3. Bidhuri caused outrage during the 2019 Lok Sabha election season when his remarks against Arvind Kejriwal allegedly violated election guidelines. As a result, the Delhi poll panel issued him a notice after receiving an AAP leader’s complaint about contesting from the South Delhi constituency.
4. Ramesh Bidhuri made headlines in 2017 after making derogatory comments against former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, as reported in The Times of India (TOI). As per this account, Bidhuri stated that in Italy grandparents may give birth within five-six months but that did not work with Indian culture – an allegation that the BJP leader included Mayawati when making such remarks against her rival party leader Sonia Gandhi.
5. Reports indicate that Bidhuri abruptly dismissed a parent who sought his assistance regarding an issue at school, asking “Why are you giving birth in the first place?”. He continued his tirade against women before asking Bidhuri what the source was.
