Parliamentary panel suggests reducing of age to contest Lok Sabha, assembly polls.

On Friday, a parliamentary committee argued in favour of lowering the voting age to 18 to increase young participation in the democratic process.

A person must be at least 25 to run in the next Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. To be eligible for election to the Rajya Sabha or a state legislative council, one must be at least 30 years old.

Voter registration is open to anybody over 18 at this time.

It notably suggested lowering the age requirement from 25 to 18 for “national elections,” often known as Lok Sabha elections. The Committee has determined that the Minimum Age for candidature in national elections should be 18 years after reviewing the practices of numerous nations like Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Parliament’s Standing Committee on Law and Personnel said that these countries’ experiences show that young people may be trustworthy and responsible political actors.

It also proposed “lowering the minimum age requirement for candidature in assembly elections.”

The BJP’s Sushil Modi, who chaired the panel, said that lowering the minimum age restriction for candidature in elections will give young people more opportunities to participate in democracy.

As stated in the paper, global practices, rising political awareness among young people, and the benefits of youth representation all support this position.

The Election Commission believes the Constitution should be untouched unless substantial grounds exist to amend it.

It is unreasonable to expect an 18-year-old to have the appropriate experience and maturity for these duties, and the Commission has previously studied the problem of harmonizing the minimum age for voting and contesting elections to Parliament, state legislature, and municipal authorities. This justifies setting a minimum age of majority for vote and running for office. The Commission has not changed its position on lowering the voting age to 16 for federal and state legislatures.
