Rahul Gandhi Takes Action: Visits Violence-Hit Manipur to Assess the Situation

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, will travel to Manipur on June 29 and 30, according to AICC general secretary KC Venugopal. During his tour, Rahul Gandhi would speak with refugees from the ethnic violence, stop by relief camps to see them, and engage in conversations with civil society leaders in Churachandpur and Imphal, according to Venugopal.

Conflicts that broke out at a rally called by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU) to protest against the demand that Meitei’s be included to the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs) caused violence to erupt in Manipur on May 3.

On June 29 and 30, Rahul Gandhi ji will travel to Manipur. During his visit, he would stop by relief camps and speak with civil society leaders in Churachandpur and Imphal. Manipur has been on fire for almost two months and needs help now more than ever for the society to transition from war to peace. We must be a force of love, not hate, because this is a humanitarian disaster, wrote KC Venugopal in a tweet.

During Rahul Gandhi’s two-day visit to Manipur, former Manipur chief minister and Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh pleaded with the locals to uphold harmony and foster cooperation.  During Rahul Gandhi’s two-day tour, he asks the Manipurese people to “maintain peace, calm, and extend cooperation.”

The handling of the violence by the BJP governments at the Centre and in the state of Manipur has drawn harsh criticism from the Congress. The party has previously called for Chief Minister N Biren Singh to be dismissed. Notably, the Assam Rifles have, to date, evacuated more than 50,000 displaced people from all communities in Manipur, which has been plagued by violence, and have given them safe passage, housing, food, and medicine.

At the all-party meeting on the violence in Manipur, opposition parties questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “silence” on the issue, but earlier on June 24, Home Minister Shah promised to bring peace back to the state.

Amit Shah also convened a conference to assess the situation in the violently unstable state. In addition to other politicians, the meeting included Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, BJP National President JP Nadda, and CPI (M) MP John Brittas.
