Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana: BJP looks to rehab first-floor slum dwellers as BMC elections loom

The state government is expected to approve the SRA plan. This would allow first-floor slum dwellers to seek Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) funding by paying a fee of Rs2.5 lakh.

The state government recently decided to offer new dwellings to slum residents living in hutments constructed between 2000 and 2011 in exchange for a payment of Rs 2.5 lakh. And now, the BJP asked that individuals staying on the first floor of hutments also be eligible.

According to political analysts, if a decision is made, it would mean that the BJP is looking to win votes before the BMC elections.
First-floor slum dwellers are now ineligible for Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) programs. Vinod Mishra, a former BJP corporator,   met with deputy chief minister and housing minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday. During the meeting, Mishra urged that first floor slum dwellers  be made eligible for and granted houses under SRA programs as part of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

The only households now eligible for free housing or under PMAY by paying Rs2.5 lakh are those residing on the ground level of slums. Even though they have been there since before 2000, those residing on the first level are ineligible. According to officials, the state government is expected to accept the demand and approve the plan shortly, allowing residents of first-floor slums to apply for PMAY funding by paying a fee of Rs2.5 lakh.

Fadnavis, according to Mishra, replied favorably and approved the SRA plan. The state housing department would shortly release a Government Resolution (GR), according to Mishra.

A GR was released last month setting the price for all of these beneficiaries born after 2000 at Rs. 2.5 lakh (estimated building cost).

If a building was built between 2001 and 2011 and the inhabitants can demonstrate documentation proving that the hut existed at any point throughout this time, they will be entitled to a rehab flat upon payment of Rs2.5 lakh under the slum protection policy.

If a decision is made, people on the first level will follow the same procedure, according to a senior official.
