Football is one of the most popular modern sports in the country. A notable moment in the history of the country’s football was when the national Super Eagles team won Olympic gold in 1996. At this point, Rashidi Yekini’s name was prominent in the football scene. Other great players who have graced the team include Austin Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo. Since then, the Super Eagles have competed in many international tournaments. The team is among the top ten African teams.

Recently, the team has witnessed impressive players such as Ahmed Musa, Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho.

While the national team may not have had much success, the love for the sport continues to grow in Nigeria. Regardless of a team’s defeat, thousands of fans gather at every World Cup to watch their national team compete against other countries. The team recently faced a rival from Ghana in their capital, Abuja. Although the Ghana team won the league, the Nigerians filled the stadium in their numbers and the love for the Super Eagles did not die out.

Aside from the national team, many Nigerians have favorite clubs, from Chelsea to Manchester United to name a few. This is further evidence of Nigerians’ deep interest in sports. Fans closely follow the matches of their clubs and stir up interest by betting on some of their predictions.

The country’s love for sports is deep. Across the street, there are numerous makeshift soccer fields where neighbours come together to get in on the action. This is one of the biggest contributing factors to Nigerians’ love for the game as they get older.
