WHAT IS BOBA TEA? WHAT ARE BOBA PEARLS?

The term boba is used now interchangeably for both the drink and the tapioca pearls used in it. Boba tea is a tea-based drink that originated in Taiwan in the 1980s and is now widely popular all around the world. You will find a boba tea bar in every city you go to, because it has really become that popular. This drink is made of tapioca pearls or boba pearls, steeped tea – from green tea to black tea and oolong – and milk.

Milk teas can range from condensed milk, plant-based milk or powdered milk, you name it, it can be done. A lot of bubble teas can have a lot of different toppings too, which makes the drinks even more appetizing. And with endless customisations come endless options and possibilities. And I am all here for it.

Boba pearls, also known as tapioca pearls, are made of the starchy part of the cassava root. Originally used as a substitute for sago – aka the spongy tissue of some palms – in South Asian cuisine, including desserts and drinks. Chewy tapioca pearls don’t have a distinctive flavour, that’s why they get soaked in syrups to give them colour and flavour, for example, the most popular is black tapioca pearls that are soaked in brown sugar syrup, which gives them their distinctive colour (Wikipedia). But you can now experience flavoured boba, popping boba, mini boba and even clear boba to name a few!

CAN I MAKE TAPIOCA PEARLS AT HOME?

You absolutely can make boba pearls at home! Buying them is possible don’t get me wrong, but since I insisted the first time we decided to try boba tea at home, we tried our hand at it even if we could find them at the local Asian market. Anyway, we followed The Flavour Bender recipe and even tried store-bought one for regular measure, and let me tell you, homemade ones are so much more delicious!

And knowing you made them, makes your drink even more special in my opinion. It was quite easy once we found this recipe, and also quite fun once you get the hang of it. The first time it will be daunting and seems impossible, but do give it a shot!

Though I agree that we don’t all have the time to make them, but if you are in the market for them, all you need is brown sugar, tapioca starch, cocoa powder and water. As simple as that you can make your own tapioca pearls and open your personal boba tea bar! It’s the easiest recipe that we found and let me assure you the first two times we used different recipes and they were a total flop!

Everything is well-explained step by step and easy to follow, so if you are up for homemade boba pearls do follow this recipe even for the Oreo Milk tea.

The Oreo Obsession: Why Oreo Milk Tea?

If you’re a fan of Oreo cookies – who isn’t, really?! – then you’re in for a treat! This Oreo milk tea combines the classic flavours of milk tea with the irresistible crunch of Oreo cookies. It’s sweet, creamy, and a little bit indulgent – perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth. And if you’re not a fan of Oreo cookies (just like me, shhhh!), then give this a shot anyway, as a newly-convert I can confirm it is the bomb. Yum. Lush.

What ingredients do I need to make this Oreo milk tea?

Before we start brewing and bubbling – of course the pun is always intended – let’s gather all the ingredients you’ll need for this delicious Oreo milk tea:

  • Boba pearls: In this Oreo milk tea recipe, we cook the boba pearls until they become soft and chewy. We then add them to a brown sugar mix, which adds a subtle sweetness and stickiness to them, enhancing the overall flavour and texture of the drink;
  • Milk: It is a crucial element in any milk tea recipe, including this Oreo milk tea. It provides a creamy, smooth texture and balances the bold flavours of the tea and the sweetness of the other ingredients. In this recipe, you have the flexibility to choose the type of milk that suits your taste or dietary preferences. You can use regular dairy milk for a classic flavour, almond milk for a nutty undertone, soy milk for a dairy-free and plant-based option, or even any other you might prefer;
  • Oreo cookies: We use crushed Oreo cookies to infuse the drink with that beloved Oreo flavour and to add a satisfying crunch. It’s a creative twist that elevates the boba tea to a whole new level of deliciousness. You can also add some crumbled Oreos on top of your whipping cream for an added texture and garnish;
  • Ice cream: it’s the secret ingredient that takes our Oreo milk tea to the next level of indulgence. We recommend using a scoop of vanilla ice cream or chocolate ice cream. Both these ice creams are a versatile choice that complements the Oreo cookies and adds a rich, creamy texture to the drink. When blended into the tea mixture, the ice cream creates a velvety consistency that makes each sip a true delight;
  • Brewed black tea: Brewed black tea is the base of our Oreo milk tea. It provides a robust and slightly astringent flavour that pairs beautifully with the sweetness of the other ingredients. It’s essential to brew the tea properly to extract its full flavour. You can also opt for green tea if you prefer a milder tea flavour or want to experiment with different taste profiles;
  • Whipped cream: Whipped cream is an optional but highly recommended topping for your Oreo milk tea. It adds a luscious, airy texture and a touch of sweetness to the drink. It also enhances the visual appeal of the drink, making it look even more tempting. It’s the finishing touch that elevates your homemade bubble tea to café-quality status, right?
  • Ice cubes: Ice cubes serve a practical purpose in keeping your Oreo milk tea refreshingly chilled. They help maintain the temperature of the drink and provide that sought-after icy element that many bubble tea lovers enjoy. Ice cubes also contribute to the overall texture of the beverage, especially on a hot day when you need a cooling, thirst-quenching treat.

So there you have it, a breakdown of the key ingredients that make our Oreo milk tea recipe so delicious and satisfying. Feel free to experiment with these ingredients to create your own unique variations and discover your personal boba bliss!

How do I make the Oreo milk tea?

Making this Oreo milk tea couldn’t be as easy, and with all you have to do is filling the blender and then the glass, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. But let’s see how to make it together.

Firstly, cook your boba pearls according to your manufacturer’s instructions, then let them cool down in a brown sugar syrup. This is so that they get that sweetness you won’t be getting from the black tea.

Then, in the jug of your blender, place the milk, ice cream of your choice, brewed black tea and Oreo cookies and blend for a minute or until smooth. We have left on the cream of the Oreos, but you can remove it and add it as a topping to your Oreo milk tea with the whipped cream. No waste allowed around here!

Time to build your drink: place the boba pearls in a tall glass, then fill it with ice and add the blended mixture on top. Easy peasy lemon squeezy, am I right?!

It goes without saying, but make sure you serve it immediately topped with some freshly whipped cream and some extra crushed Oreos for an added garnish.
