The Best Watermelon Lime Tequila Spritzer Cocktail Recipe

I can already picture myself making pitchers of this Watermelon tequila spritzer all summer long. Mainly because it’s the perfect tequila spritzer recipe you will ever find, and serving it in a tall glass with some good food and snacks. It will most definitely crown both me (and you) the happy hour hero of the season. And if that’s not a title you want, I think it’s a little weird.

The beauty of this watermelon and lime tequila spritzer is that it needs no cocktail shaker, has got very little prep work and it’s packed with so much fresh lime juice and fresh watermelon juice to make this summer unforgettable.

This tequila spritzer also offers itself as a base for many different fruits. While we have gone for watermelon juice, you can also opt for something different: grapefruit juice, orange juice or even pineapple will work brilliantly here. And even the healthy splash of mineral water can be replaced by some nice ginger beer, which makes this tequila spritzer the perfect drink to serve at your next cocktail party.

Let’s make this watermelon tequila spritzer together.

This is not our first recipe using watermelon, we already have a beautiful watermelon salad with feta and rocket. But our first drink for sure, and what a refreshing tequila spritzer recipe you’re about to discover! But let’s chat about the benefits of watermelon before we hit the road on this recipe.

What is watermelon?

Watermelon is a flowering plant species of the Cucurbitaceae family. It’s a highly cultivated fruit worldwide and grows as a scrambling and trailing vine-like plant, with more than 1,000 varieties. Watermelon is grown in favourable climates from tropical to temperate regions worldwide for its large edible fruit, which is a berry with a hard rind and no internal divisions and is botanically called a pepo.

The sweet and juicy flesh is usually deep red to pink in colour, with many black seeds through it, although seedless varieties exist. The fruit can be eaten raw or pickled, and the rind is edible after cooking it (Wikipedia).

Is watermelon good for you?

The short answer is yes! Not only is watermelon high in water, which is great for summer, but it also has plenty of nutrients and vitamins.

Some of these include fibres, loads of vitamin C, vitamin A and minerals and antioxidants. So not only does it helps you keep hydrated, but it also improves your heart health and lowers inflammation. Not only that, but watermelon is also perfect for your skin and hair, as the vitamin C contained in it helps your body make collagen. And we all love some collagen, don’t we?

But I heard eating watermelon can have side effects

It goes without saying that eating watermelon (or anything in general) in moderation it’s probably the best idea. As with every food, abusing it can create side effects. But I can assure you that having a salad, a drink or a couple of slices won’t make you feel bad. Being mostly rich in water and having a high glycemic count, may up your glucose level if you eat too much.

Are watermelon seeds bad for you?

Funny enough, you may think they are but actually, they are not. They are the most nutrient-dense seeds. They are high in calories and rich in proteins, vitamins, omega 3, omega 6, zinc, magnesium, copper, potassium and fatty acids. So they make an actual great snack when roasted and make a unique add-on on top of salads for a crunch.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH THE WATERMELON SKIN?

Usually, it’s cut off and thrown away. But in the spirit of using anything and avoiding food waste, or even learning something new, watermelon skin is edible. You can juice it, cut it and use it in your stir fry. You can pickle it. And surprisingly enough it’s great sugared and candied.

What ingredients do I need to make this watermelon tequila spritzer?

The ingredients you’ll need to make this tequila spritzer are basic if you like to make cocktails at home. We have a base of juice, in this case, it’s fresh watermelon juice but as I mentioned it could be grapefruit juice or even orange juice making it an orange tequila spritzer. You could opt for the sunshiny flavor of pineapple juice making it a pineapple tequila spritzer, or go black and have a blackberry tequila spritzer. So many choices and we’re just at the juice!

Then you’ll need fresh lime juice, or even fresh lemon juice if you cannot get hold of limes. Of course, we prefer lime as it’s slightly sweeter, but needs must. Up next is the alcohol, in this case, is of course tequila and then triple sec.

Depending on the sweetness of your watermelon and the overall sweetness level you like, you will need agave syrup. This can easily be replaced by simple syrup. And at last, we have sparkling water, club soda, or tonic water, whatever floats your boat, and plenty of ice. Garnish is optional, but you can go as basic as a few lime wedges.

How do I make this watermelon tequila spritzer?

This Watermelon Tequila Spritzer is as easy as blending, juicing and mixing. Let’s do it together! First off, juice the limes and place the juice in a big jug. Time to measure the good stuff: add the tequila and the triple sec to the same jug, then mix well using a spoon.

You can now juice the watermelon, making sure you remove the seeds and skin, then add it to the jug with the agave syrup and combine. Adjust the sweetness accordingly. When ready to serve, fill a tall glass with large ice cubes, fill half the glass with the watermelon mixture and then top it up with sparkling water. For garnish, slice an entire lime and use a slice or two, then add a slice of freshly cut watermelon and serve immediately.

You can use simple syrup instead of agave, and with either one, you can adjust sweetness accordingly. Just make sure you taste as you go! Sparkling water can also be replaced by club soda or tonic water, if that’s what you prefer or you got on hand.
