Easter Cheese Board: The Ultimate Guide to Creating the Perfect One

I love Cheese, and cheese seems to share this same love for me – which is brilliant when it comes to hosting! We hosted some friends and family members this past weekend and decided to serve an Easter Cheese Board to kick off the meal. Because all good things should start with cheese as an appetizer, am I right?

While the weather was not in our favour, even though spring seems to have kicked off here, we enjoyed this alternative to an Easter charcuterie board so much that I thought it would be great to share my secrets. So here goes the ultimate guide to creating the perfect Easter cheese board!

How can you theme a cheese board, though? Well, why it’s kind of challenging to serve a specific Easter cheese board as such, you can find some bits and bobs to help you get to the right place. Whether that’s some seasonal vegetables, or even candies and chocolate, you will be able to style your cheese or charcuterie boards easily just by following some of my tips. And even a cookie cutter to carve a cheese or two will be absolutely brilliant!

Easter Cheese Board

What is an Easter Cheese Board and How to Create One

While you can’t really consider this Easter cheese board a recipe per se, it is such an easy board to create you will want to make more and more of it. With a really minimal prep time, this is one of those new recipes you will recreate over and over. A cheese board for Easter might not be traditional, but it definitely something you will enjoy preparing – and eating – for any occasion.

A cheese board is, by definition, a tray or platter for serving a variety of cheeses provided either before or after a meal (Dictionary.com). And you will be happy to know that it does not only include cheese and crackers! Think of it as a grazing board with cheese, of course, then crackers and fresh stuff like vegetables and fruits. Dried fruit, gherkins, olives and fresh bread, but also herbs and nuts. The whole deal.

You will basically make a selection of different cheese, from hard to soft and even smoked, then you will get to select your vegetables and fruits – tomatoes, apples, cucumbers and carrots but also bell pepper, grapes and celery, if it tickles your fancy! Add some dried fruits too, like dried cranberries or dried apricots. All the pickles and gherkins, but also some savoury jams and chutney. And nuts, like walnuts or pistachios, but also some fresh herbs to decorate, then all the crackers and bread.

Just arrange to your heart’s content and you’re done – or also follow my tips and tricks below!

How to Choose the Best Cheeses for Your Easter Cheese Board

When it comes to selecting your cheese for a cheese board, there are what I like to call some general rules. But a well-balanced board consist of not only random cheese bits and bread, it’s a science and you can make it your best board ever if you follow these tips!

Every cheese board should include these types of cheeses:

  • A soft cheese or two – like goats cheese, Brie, Camembert or Mozzarella;
  • Semi-firm choices – like Cheddar, Manchego or Gouda;
  • Something aged – like Asiago, Parmigiano or Pecorino;
  • Something blue – like Gorgonzola, Stilton or Roquefort
  • Some smoked cheese – like Provola, Northumberland Smoked or Smoked Applewood.

Of course, you can pick one or more for each section, but a well-balanced board will include one of each category.

When it comes to the rest of the board, see some of the items you could also add:

  • fresh fruits & vegetables – like strawberries, figs, grapes, carrots, celery or olives;
  • nuts – like almonds, cashews, pistachios or walnuts;
  • crackers & bread;
  • spreads – like chutney or honey.

These will help to add colour, like a pop of green, to the food on the board. And you’ll be able to convince any kid at the table to eat some of the veggies just like the Easter bunny!

Step-by-Step Guide to Assembling an Easter Cheese Board

While you might find it as scary as we initially did, assembling the Easter cheese board was actually more fun than expected! We grabbed some small bowls to secure some of the goods in like olives, sundried tomatoes and chutneys – and honey, just not pictured – then started from the middle and worked our way around the centrepiece.

Our centrepiece here was the Camembert, which we carved using a cookie cutter to get the little hopping bunny and make it more festive. Then it’s a matter of getting all the nuts and crackers and the rest of the cheese and condiments to make their way. We arranged them around the little bowls, either sliced like with the Gouda and Asiago cheese, in chunks like the Parmesan or in one full piece like the Brie.

We also decorated it with some fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme and drizzled the Brie with some nice honey to seal the whole deal. To say that this whole Easter cheese board fed 7 people – and dare I say it, disappeared quite quickly! – quite comfortably would be an understatement!

Any tips and tricks when building the Easter cheese board?

While there are no tricks up my sleeve when it comes to this Easter cheese board – or any charcuterie board for that matter – that you haven’t seen or heard before, I have some tips that might actually be quite helpful.

First and foremost, gather all you need including knives, bowls and a proper board! Having all on hand, including all the ingredients you are planning on displaying, is honestly so helpful. You won’t be running around like a headless chicken trying to find all the bits and bobs you will need.

Secondly, plan the cheese and condiments ahead, maybe even draw them out. Even before you head to the supermarket! You will end up having all you need without buying too much – like I did, good job we love cheese in this house!

Drawing your plan out will also be helpful when you’re building your board, but going with the flow it’s also quite fun here so don’t fixate too much on it! This Easter cheese board has to be a fun dish to make and serve, period.

Pairing Wines and Accompaniments with your Easter Cheese Plate

Like with everything else in food, wine pairings are not as easy as they seem. But there is a wine for every cheese if not more than one, so let me assist you in picking the right one based on the choices I made for this Easter cheese board!

A cheese like Gouda will go very well with a nice glass of Riesling. And Riesling will also go very well with Comté and Edam.

Then you can have your Brie with a cold glass of Champagne, or even a Sauvignon Blanc and a good Pinot Noir. The Champagne will also go with blue cheese like a Roquefort. And the Sauvignon Blanc will be perfect with goat’s cheese.

You get the gist here – as long as you pick a couple of wines, maybe a red and a white, or even a sparkling and a rose, you will be able to build the perfect cheese board and get all your guests drinking one of their absolute favourite wines without breaking the bank.

So that’s the end of this post.

No Easter celebration is complete without the main event: a delicious, savoury cheeseboard. If you’re looking for an impressive, yet easy-to-assemble centrepiece for your holiday feast this year, try assembling a beautiful Easter cheese board that will make your guests ooh and aah. With just a few simple ingredients, you can quickly and easily create a stunning board that’s sure to wow everyone.
