August 2022 Book Releases You Should Read

After a mid-July heatwave here in the UK, believe me when I say that July has left in a swirl. And I am totally glad about that! And with a new month approaching, I can’t miss sharing the August 2022 Book releases. Also, in the last few months, I have gotten back into graphic novels and it’s been such a refreshing experience.

Previously, I used to read a lot of mangas and graphic novels growing up instead of books. Nevertheless, I kind of left it on the side for books after a while. So it’s been a walk down memory lane with plenty of new reads that I loved. But that will have to have a post of its own.

Getting back to the August 2022 book releases. There are some interesting new fictions that I want to read. And also a highly anticipated new release from Taylor Jenkins Reid.

This post contains affiliate links and we may earn a small commission when you click on the links at no additional cost to you. We would only recommend products we use and love ourselves, and all opinions expressed here are our own. Please read our Privacy Policy here. Thank you!

Rather than listening to more of my blab, let’s check out the August 2022 book releases you should add to your reading list!

THE PACHINKO PARLOUR by ELISA SHUA DUSAPIN – August 1st

AMAZON – BOOKSHOP.ORG – Book Depository – WATERSTONES

SYNOPSIS

The days are beginning to draw in. The sky is dark by seven in the evening. I lie on the floor and gaze out of the window. Women’s calves, men’s shoes, heels trodden down by the weight of bodies borne for too long.

It is summer in Tokyo. Claire finds herself dividing her time between tutoring twelve-year-old Mieko, in an apartment in an abandoned hotel, and lying on the floor at her grandparents: daydreaming, playing Tetris and listening to the sounds from the street above. The heat rises; the days slip by.

The plan is for Claire to visit Korea with her grandparents. They fled the civil war there over fifty years ago, along with thousands of others, and haven’t been back since. When they first arrived in Japan, they opened Shiny, a pachinko parlour. Shiny is still open, drawing people in with its bright, flashing lights and promises of good fortune. And as Mieko and Claire gradually bond, a tender relationship growing, Mieko’s determination to visit the pachinko parlour builds.

The Pachinko Parlour is a nuanced and beguiling exploration of identity and otherness, unspoken histories, and the loneliness you can feel amongst family. Crisp and enigmatic, Shua Dusapin’s writing glows with intelligence.

MY IMAGINARY MARY by ASHTON, HAND & MEADOWS – August 2nd

BOOK DEPOSITORY

SYNOPSIS

Mary may have inherited the brilliant mind of her late mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, but she lives a drab life above her father’s bookstore, waiting for an extraordinary idea that’ll inspire a work worthy of her parentage—and impress her rakishly handsome (and super-secret) beau, Percy Shelley.

Ada Lovelace knows a thing or two about superstar parents, what with her dad being Lord Byron, the most famous poet on Earth. But her passions lie far beyond the arts—in mechanical engineering, to be exact. Alas, no matter how precise Ada’s calculations, there’s always a man willing to claim her ingenious ideas as his own.

Pan, a.k.a. Practical Automaton Number One, is Ada’s greatest idea yet: a machine that will change the world, if only she can figure out how to make him truly autonomous . . . or how to make him work at all.

When fate connects our two masterminds, Mary and Ada learn that they are fae—magical people with the ability to make whatever they imagine become real. But when their dream team results in a living, breathing, thinking PAN, Mary and Ada find themselves hunted by a mad scientist who won’t stop until he finds out how they made a real boy out of spare parts.

With comic genius and a truly electrifying sense of adventure, Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows continue their campaign to turn history on its head in this YA fantasy that’s perfect for fans of The Princess Bride and A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue.

SYNOPSIS

The Haunting of Hill House meets Knives Out in a bid for an inheritance that will leave Helen Vaughan either rich…or dead.

So when her grandfather dies, she’s shocked to learn that he has left everything—the house, the grounds, and the money—to her. The inheritance comes with one condition: she must stay on the grounds of Harrow for one full year, or she’ll be left with nothing.

There is more at stake than money. For as long as she can remember, Harrow has haunted Helen’s dreams. And now those dreams have become a waking nightmare. Helen knows that if she is going to survive the year, she needs to uncover the secrets of Harrow. Why is the house built like a labyrinth? With each twisted revelation, Helen questions what she knows about Harrow, her family, and even herself. She no longer wonders if she wants to leave…but if she can.

HOW YOU GROW WINGS by RIMMA ONOSETA – August 9th

AMAZON – BOOKSHOP.ORG – BOOK DEPOSITORY – WATERSTONES

SYNOPSIS

Sisters Cheta and Zam couldn’t be more different. Cheta, sharp-tongued and stubborn, never shies away from conflict—either at school or at home, where her mother fires abuse at her. Timid Zam escapes most of her mother’s anger, skating under the radar and avoiding her sister whenever possible. In a turn of good fortune, Zam is invited to live with her aunt’s family in the lap of luxury. Jealous, Cheta also leaves home, but finds a harder existence that will drive her to terrible decisions. When the sisters are reunited, Zam alone will recognize just how far Cheta has fallen—and Cheta’s fate will rest in Zam’s hands.

Debut author Rimma Onoseta deftly explores classism, colourism, cycles of abuse, how loyalty doesn’t always come attached to love, and the messy truths that sometimes family is not a source of comfort and that morality is all shades of grey.

Though Yitian has been estranged from his father for years, he tells his mother he will come home.

When Yitian returns to the village and attempts to piece together what may have happened. He struggles to navigate the country’s impenetrable bureaucracy as an outsider. And poured everything into studying for the newly reinstated college entrance exam. But when events spiralled into tragedy, their paths diverged. And while Yitian made it to Beijing, then to America. Hanwen was left behind, resigned to life as a mid-level bureaucrat’s wealthy housewife.

Reuniting for the first time as adults, Yitian and Hanwen embark on the search for Yitian’s father. All the while grappling with the past—who Yitian’s father really was, and what might have been. Spanning the late 1970s to 1990s and moving effortlessly between rural provinces and grand cities.
