Gardening Hack: 8 natural pest repellents

Do you love growing your own but find that pests often interfere with your crop yields. Well, in this post, I will share the best Natural Pest Repellents for your garden.

These plants are even safe for your pets (don’t let them eat them of course).

This list of herbs, flowers and plants are some of the best natural pest repellents and they should keep your garden happy all year around.

Basil

This herb is very easy to grow and often does not require a lot of space. It will repel mosquitoes and houseflies. Even though houseflies rarely cause any damage to your plants, they are quite a nuisance to your garden.

Rosemary

I love Rosemary because its such a versatile herb. It is part of the Mint family along with other herbs such as thyme and basil and can be used for medicinal and culinary purposes.

Rosemary will protect your vegetable plants from slugs that might want to feed on the plants you’re growing with its strong fragrance.

Marigold

This flower is not only beautiful to have in the garden but it is also quite easy to grow. The scent of Marigold can be effective in keeping away aphids, white flies and even rabbits.

You can companion plant these flowers into your vegetable garden to keep your crops growing happily. These will also attract bees to your garden, which is good for pollination.

Lavender

These purple looking flowers are great for keeping away mosquitoes, caterpillars, fleas and moths.

Peppermint

Peppermint or mint of any kind is great for keeping away spiders, ants, caterpillars, and again mosquitoes. I plant some mint in the garden every summer to keep away the spiders. I absolutely hate spiders.

Thyme/Oregano

These herbs are great for keeping away those cabbage worms and common garden slugs. I personally don’t grow cabbage anymore because it is very tricky. I always end up with no harvest, as either the snails, or worms eat them. Thyme will however help you grow your best cabbage.

Freshly cut Thyme

Onion family

Onions (garlic, spring onions, onions) make delicious sauces/recipes. In your garden however, they are good for repelling aphids that often attack your roses.

Chives

Chives are similar to onions but they have a milder taste and are low maintenance. They are perennials which means you don’t have to worry about re-planting them every season.

You only need to plant them once and they should spring back year after year. They are great to plant with your carrots to keep away the carrot flies. I mean that’s what natural pest repellents are for right.
