NCC TRAINS EKITI NSCDC OFFICERS ON MODERN PROTECTION STRATEGIES

The National Communication Commission on Thursday 28 September organised a one day Training and Sensitization Programme for the Officers and Men of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Ekiti State Command, Ado Ekiti.

This is contained in a statement by the spokesman for the command, Tola Afolabi.

According to the statement, the programme which took place at the Command’s Headquarters along Ikere/ Ado Ekiti State had in attendance the Area Commanders and Divisional Officers from all the sixteen Local Governments and twenty Local Council Development Areas, and other other officers from Area Commands.

The officers trooped into to the venue of the programme to learn new methods of protecting and safeguarding Critical National Assets and Infrastructure which is one of the core mandates of NSCDC in line with the Acts that established the Corps.

In consonance with the recognition given to the Corps by National Communication Commission as the Lead Security Agency saddled with the responsibility of protecting National Assets, the Commission appreciated the efforts of the Corps on the policies and strategies put in place to checkmate vandals of optic viber cables, base stations and other Telecommunication facilities in Nigeria with a call to the Management of the Corps to continue in their drive in order to ensure Nigerians enjoy seamless communication services which vandals always distrupt the infrastructure through stealing, malicious damages and sabotage.

The Ibadan based Zonal Director of National Communication Commission, Dr. Olubunmi Bamijoko, who came in company with other Officials, emphasized on the need to use new technologies available to protect telecommunication facilities.

This strategy, according to him, may involve early detection of faults orchestrated by vandals so that consumers will not be deprived of services rendered by the telecommunication companies, especially in critical periods of rescue and emergencies when lives of the victims are at stake.

The System Engineer in the Team allayed the fears of the people about the siting of Base stations in the country, as he opined that Nigeria needs more Base stations to be able to enjoy unhindered telecommunication connectivity; as the existing Base stations are not enough to cater for the growing communication demands in the country.

He also enjoined Nigerians to allow Base stations in their environment as it has been certified by World Health Organisation that it constitutes no threat to the environment as well as health management of the people – because the emissions from the Telecom radios are non ionizing radiation.
In addition, he however called on the people to report any environmental hazards emanating from Base stations to the Commission and other Agencies for prompt actions.

The State Commandant Mr John Olatunde Fayemi who led other top Management Team and other rank and file to the program, thanked the Commission for recognizing Ekiti NSCDC and urge them to continue in their efforts to educate Nigerians about new development in the Communication world so as not to be lagging behind as the world is fast growing on our finger tips beyond the conventional computers and other old devices we knew.

Speaking further, the Commadant thanked the management of the commission for the sensitization program and appealed to them for tosupport in areas of logistics in order to enhance the capability of the Corps to discharge their mandate effectively.
