Parks on the Air Activation a 2fer in Utah

I had a great Parks on the Air activation at K-5950 This is the Place Heritage Park. This was my second POTA activation at this park.  I have not done a POTA activation for two months and felt it was time to get out and do one.

I knew I could do a 2fer from K-5950 with K-4578 Pony Express National Historic Trail. The National Pony Express Monument is located at the park. The trail runs through where the monument is located. There is a parking lot west of the monument by the Mormon Battalion Monument and the trail runs through it. This is where I parked my car and did my activation.

As you can see from the pictures there was some snow. There was about four inches in the park. The temperature was in the mid 30s and the sun was out so it was not too bad.

Parks on the Air Entity K-5950 – This is the Place Heritage Park

This POTA Park is located in Salt Lake City, Utah.  It is located across the street from the Hogle Zoo and just down the road from the mouth of Emigration Canyon.  Three trails came out of this canyon, the Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail, the California National Historic Trail and the Pony Express National Historic Trail.

This is the Place Heritage Park shows the events and history of the Mormon Pioneer crossing the plains and arriving in the Salt Lake valley. The park has several actual and replica buildings of homes and business in Utah. They have created a town from the buildings and it is interesting to read about each building. They have a leather shop with people working on leather projects.

On the first weekend of December they have a Christmas Market, which is really popular, and that is why there is a Christmas Tree by the visitor center.

There is a large This is the Place monument telling about all the various parties who discovered and traveled through the Salt Valley and the Mormon Pioneers.

If you like history it is a great place to visit to learn about the western migration and settling of the Salt Lake valley. The California Trail also goes through This is the Place Heritage Park and goes north but you can’t drive to where the trail is located.

POTA Activation K-5950 – Ham Radio Equipment

On this Parks on the Air Activation I used my Yaesu FT-857D HF transceiver running at 90 watts. For my antenna I used my MFJ 1979 17ft Telescoping Antenna.

I used my Bioenno Power 20 Ah LiFePO4 Battery to power the ham radio.

POTA Contacts

I worked the ham radio airwaves for just over one hour and I was able to make 89 QSOs including 12 Park-to-Park QSOs.

I worked stations DX stations in Puerto Rico and Mexico which was a P2P.  The rest were in the US and Canada.  I had great openings to Washington, Idaho, California and British Columbia.  All these stations were coming in 59+

I can’t put a ham radio HF antenna at my townhome so the only way I can hunt POTA Activators is doing a POTA Activation.

I made 12 P2P QSOs at the following POTA Entities:

K-5683 Kil-So-Quah State Recreation Area
K-3025 Lake Casa Blanca International State Park
K-7519 Bridger State Conservation Area
K-7839 Santa Fe Prairie State Nature Preserve
K-0315 Red River National Wildlife Refuge
K-2956 Long Hunter State Park
K-6240 Couchville Cedar Glade State Natural Area
K-2888 Cheraw State Park
K-7435 Civil War Trail State Trail
K-9681 Camden Expedition Scenic Highway State Trail
XE-0130 Cuencas de los ríos Valle de Bravo, Malacatepec, Tilostoc y Temascaltepec Forest Reserve

Parks on the Air Logging

I used my Dell Laptop using N3FJP Amateur Contact Log using the POTA template to log my QSOs.  When I got home I exported my QSOs and imported them on my Dell Desktop into Amateur Contact Log to make any updates.  I uploaded directly to LoTW (Log Book of the World) from Amateur Contact log. Then exported my POTA Log File to upload to QRZ and to create my QSO Map.

Since I had a number of 2fer P2P QSOs I needed to update my exported POTA Log File to add them.  Since I did a 2fer I needed to make a copy of my K-5950 Log File to create my K-4578 Log File.  I needed to update the POTA Park information to K-4578.

POTA now lets you upload your log files instead of emailing them to a POTA Area Rep for upload.  You upload them on then POTA App website.

Thank you for all of those who hunted me.  Also a big thanks to all of the Parks on the Air Spotters.  Without you a POTA Activation is hard to be successful.

Scott Green K7JSG – I have been a licensed ham radio operator for over six years and participate in ham radio contests each year. I'm an avid Parks on the Air (POTA) activator and hunter using portable ham radio.  Also I enjoy the VHF/UHF side of ham radio and at times participates as a rover in VHF contests
