What is the difference between a Carburetor and a Fuel Injection?

Read Time:1 Minute, 45 Second

A mixture of airfuel and Fuel injection is delivered to the engine by Carburetors and Fuel Injection Systems. Carburetors are devices used for mixing air and fuel at a specified ratio, delivering it into the intake manifold. The fuel injection system uses electronics and sensors, which are used for the delivery of fuel. Fuel is sprayed straight to the combustion chamber, where it will be mixed with air from an exhaust valve. In this article, I will compare carburetor vs. Fuel injection.

Carburetor vs Fuel Injection

Carburetor Fuel Injection System
  • Carburetor relies on suction created by intake air accelerated through a Venturi tube to draw the fuel into the airstream.
  • Carburetor does not monitor the air-fuel mixture ratio.
  • The best fuel to air ratio for each cylinder is approximated for the best performance.
  • Carburetors do last longer than fuel injection systems and are cheap compared to fuel injectors.
  • Carburetors are also much simpler to install than fuel injection systems because there are no electrical components or return lines to the fuel tank
  • It atomizes the fuel through a small nozzle under high pressure.
  • Fuel injector monitors air-fuel mixture and sends the proper ratio of the air fuel mixture into the cylinder.
  • It injects fuel directly to the specific cylinder, using the specific injector for the specific cylinder.
  • They are costlier and are complicated to install as they use an electrical component and custom cylinder head configuration.
  • They reduce the emission and have a better performance with better fuel efficiency.

Nowadays Fuel injection is widely used as it saves fuel and gives more power, and moreover, it has low emission which is one of the most important factors which should be considered. Yes, it is costly and complicated and needs an expert to install and maintain, but that is fine when seeing the emission level and low fuel consumption.

Hope this difference between carburetors vs fuel injection gives you an idea of why fuel injection systems are better than carburetor
