Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejeon, southwest of Seoul, have developed an Electronic Tattoo Ink made of liquid metal and carbon nanotubes that act as bioelectrodes.
Connected to an electrocardiogram (ECG) device or other biosensor, the patient's heart rate and other vital signs, such as glucose and lactate, can be sent to the monitor.
The research aims to achieve distribution with biosensors.
Have tattoos been able to take care of our health? "In the future, we hope to connect wireless chips integrated with this ink to communicate or send signals from inside the body to external devices," said project leader Steve Park. Professor of Materials Science and Engineering.
Such monitors could theoretically be placed anywhere, including the patient's home.
The ink is indelible and is made from particles based on gallium, a soft metal and silver used in semiconductors or thermometers. Platinum-coated carbon nanotubes help conduct electricity while providing durability.
"When the liquid is used, it will not come out even if it is tattooed, which is just not possible with liquid metal," said Park.
