Why Are Killer Whales Attacking Yachts?

Recently, a pod of orcas was seen off the New England coast, just 40 miles south of Nantucket, Massachusetts.

For the scientists studying these Whales, it was a once-in-a-lifetime “unreal” experience, as orcas do not typically congregate in New England waters, and these Killer Whales seemed to also be swimming in formation, which is even more rare to see. To this point, there is only one orca – known as “Old Thom” – that typically swims in North Atlantic waters. So this really is something to get excited about, if you’re into that sort of thing.

But this is just one of the many strange orca stories coming out these days. The strangest, and most satisfying, stories are of Killer Whales Attacking vessels – especially yachts – all over the world.

So what’s going on here?

What Are the Orcas Planning Against Humans?

On the surface, it sure seems like revenge. There have been reports of orcas attacking ships in the past, but something about this round seems different, more… coordinated. Earlier this May, orcas attacked sailors in the Strait of Gibraltar, and just a few days later, it was reported that killer whales also sunk a Swiss sailing yacht.

Some scientists are trying to reassure us all by insisting these orcas aren’t driven strictly by revenge, but other marine biologists have speculated that some killer whales might actually be acting out of response to past trauma related to run-ins with other vessels and are simply acting out of precaution.

That being said, we can’t rule out that these orca supergroups have bigger plans in mind, or that they’ve managed to unite the oceans in their quest against humans. After all, those orcas swimming in New England waters were also seen palling around with other whales and dolphins. And we just learned about tiger sharks recently attacking a Netflix crew filming a documentary series in Hawaii.

We may not know what the ultimate plan is for these killer whales, but what we do know is that it’s a bad time to be in the ocean.
