Workers are Evacuated When a Fire Breaks Out Onboard an FPSO in The North Sea

On 2 April 2022, oil employees were evacuated after a fire broke out on a tanker off the coast of Shetland in the North Sea.

At 15:00, Sumburgh and Stornoway coastguard helicopters were dispatched to a fire on the Petrojarl Foinaven floating production storage vessel.

A number of crew members were evacuated to nearby bases. The situation appears to be under control.

The vessel is being decommissioned and is located around 95 nautical miles west of Sumburgh.

A BP spokesman, speaking about the incident, said:

Following the incident on the Foinaven Petrojarl floating production storage offload (FPSO) vessel, BP is working with its duty holder Altera Infrastructure.

The incident, which involved a fire in a store room, was immediately brought under control, with 30 non-essential staff safely relocated to other locations as a precaution, according to BP.

“The safety of our employees and contractors is at the heart of everything we do, and we’ll keep working with Altera and the relevant authorities to figure out what occurred here.”
