Media reports revealed that Manchester United has chosen Ivan Providel, the Italian goalkeeper for Lazio, in preparation for including him during the current winter transfer period to support the goalkeeping position in light of the fluctuating performance shown by Cameroonian Andre Onana in the African Cup of Nations.

The 27-year-old's place at Old Trafford is now under threat, as the club is said to be looking to bring in a new goalkeeper during Onana's absence with his national team.

According to the newspaper “Quotespor”, “Red Devils” coach Ten Hag is interested in signing Lazio goalkeeper Providel in the winter Mercato.

Ten Hag does not have full confidence in reserve goalkeeper Altay Binder, who is set to at least in the near future stand in for Onana during the Africa Cup of Nations.

Onana, the goalkeeper of the English Manchester United team and the Cameroonian national team, was subjected to severe criticism by Al-Manio fans.

An individual error by Onana caused Cameroon to concede the first goal against Senegal in the match between the two teams, on Friday, which was won by the “Lions of Teranga” with a 3-1 victory in the second round of the group stage of the African Cup of Nations.

Onana brought back to the minds of United fans the naive mistakes he commits with his team throughout the current season.

The Cameroonian international had a difficult start with the Red Devils, as he made a number of mistakes since he replaced David De Gea after his £47.1 million ($60 million) transfer from Inter Milan last summer.

Onana is currently participating in the African Cup of Nations with his country, after missing the opening match after staying to play with United in the FA Cup match against Wigan.

Onana has so far played in all of his team's matches in the English Premier League this season, conceding 29 goals in 21 matches.

Providel is said to be looking for a better contract with Lazio, with the player unhappy with his current terms with the Italian side. Providel joined Lazio in 2022 from Spezia, and his contract extends until June 2027.

During his career with Lazio, the 29-year-old kept 32 clean sheets during the 71 matches he played in various competitions.

Providel was named the best goalkeeper in the Italian League last season.

He became famous for the goal he scored for Lazio against Atletico Madrid in the final moments of their Champions League match. It is the first goal scored by a goalkeeper in the continental championship since 2010.

Onana may face a battle for his place at Old Trafford if the team signs Providel in the current winter transfer market.
