Under new plans from the Home Office, illegal migrants will now have only 30 minutes to prove that they should not be deported to Rwanda. Home Office staff will be trained to quickly assess whether migrants meet the criteria for deportation upon their arrival in the UK. The four criteria for removal include entering the country without permission, arriving after July 20 of the current year, not coming from a country where their life and liberty are at risk, and not having permission to stay in Britain. Previously, migrants went through a longer interview process, but now they will have a 30-minute interview to determine their eligibility for deportation. During this interview, migrants will be asked if they want to oppose their removal on the grounds of potential harm. They will then have eight days to prepare their case and submit evidence to support their claim. If a migrant is found eligible for deportation, they will be detained and moved to an immigration center until their removal. Critics argue that conducting an immigration interview under an hour is unrealistic and that eight days is not enough time for proper legal preparation. The Home Office is reportedly planning to spend up to £700 million to deport up to 4,000 migrants to Rwanda by October 2024, pending Supreme Court approval.
