At 10.30am every day, Bernard Jordan would set out for a walk from his home at The Pines in Hove, East Sussex. He would always buy fruit and chocolate for his wife, Irene, and then go for a stroll along the seafront, stopping for a cup of tea at a café. After lunch, he would return home and spend the rest of the day with Irene. However, on June 5, 2014, Bernard had a different plan. He announced that he was going to France and everyone assumed he was joking. Little did they know, he was on a mission to attend the 70th anniversary events of the D-Day landings. He made his way to northern France and checked into a hotel near the celebrations. He even stood alongside other veterans, the Queen, and other VIPs during the official proceedings. It took 36 hours before he returned home, becoming known as “The Great Escaper” in the process. After Bernard passed away, Irene followed a week later. The couple left their estate to the RNLI in memory of Bernard’s time at sea. Now, almost a decade later, a film called “The Great Escaper” has been made, starring Sir Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson, bringing their incredible adventure and love story back to life.
