A high school teacher in Florida was brutally attacked by a 270-pound autistic student, but she refuses to support a lighter sentence for him. Joan Naydich was assaulted by Brendan Depa, then 17, in February after she told him to stop playing on his Nintendo Switch. Security video footage shows Depa punching and kicking Naydich until she became unconscious. Despite the incident, Naydich has shown no interest in reducing the penalties Depa might face. Depa, who has a history of battery arrests, is facing up to 30 years in prison for first-degree felony aggravated battery. He is expected to plead guilty to avoid jail time, and his sentencing will come later. Matanzas High School, where the assault occurred, has been plagued by violence in recent years. In another recent incident, eleven students were arrested after a fight erupted in a crowded hallway. Additionally, a 16-year-old student was arrested for biting a teacher who intervened in a fight between two girls.
