Israel has placed its special hostage extraction unit, known as Sayeret Matkal, on standby to potentially rescue the 150 Israelis who were kidnapped by Hamas terrorists and taken into Gaza over the weekend. The unit, which is modeled after the British SAS, is well-known for its involvement in the 1976 Uganda airport raid, where Israeli commandos successfully rescued 100 of their countrymen from Palestinian hijackers. Currently, the hostages are being held by Hamas, who have threatened to execute one hostage for every civilian target Israel’s military bombs in Gaza without warning. The unit would face significant challenges in carrying out a rescue mission, as Gaza is believed to be filled with booby traps and heavily defended by Hamas fighters. The densely populated area and large civilian population also make it difficult to locate the hostages. Despite the risks involved, Israel is in a race against time as Hamas continues to threaten the lives of the hostages. The United States has offered to assist Israel with planning and intelligence support if needed.
