Ex-BBC Sport presenter Steve Rider, 73, has announced that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He expressed gratitude towards fellow broadcaster Nick Owen for inspiring him to get checked. Rider revealed that Owen’s appearance on BBC Breakfast discussing his battle with the disease made him realize the importance of taking action. Owen, 75, had previously revealed in August that he has been suffering from “extensive” and “aggressive” prostate cancer, despite having no symptoms. Rider stated, “It’s people familiar, maybe from the television screen, or a friend down the pub, that really triggers the thought that ‘maybe I should get myself checked’. That’s what happened with me – Nick’s experience resonated with me.” Rider disclosed that a friend’s random examination resulted in the discovery of a significant prostate problem, which prompted him to get tested. He further shared that during Geoff Stelling’s charity walk, he met many individuals going through similar experiences. Rider, who did not have any symptoms, received the news of his diagnosis after a biopsy and assumed he would have regular checks for the next six months. However, he was informed that surgery was necessary as soon as possible. Fortunately, the cancer is contained within the prostate, increasing the chances of a successful cure. Owen, who revealed his cancer diagnosis earlier, described it as “extensive” and “aggressive,” stating that it was the worst day of his life. Owen highlighted the crucial role of his wife in his recovery, particularly through her reflexology sessions and medical support, including administering injections. Both Rider and Owen hope that by sharing their experiences, they can raise awareness about the importance of early detection and treatment for prostate cancer.
