A picturesque village in Cornwall, Trevalga, has been sold to the billionaire real estate family, the William Pears Group, for £16 million. This sale has ended a decade-long battle over the ownership of the village and has sparked concerns among locals that they may be evicted from their homes. The village is located near the popular tourist attraction Tintagel and residents fear that their quiet way of life may be disrupted. Cornwall councillor Barry Jordan has expressed the need for more information about the new owner’s plans for Trevalga and the potential risk of eviction, especially for those on short-term tenancies. Last year, Marlborough College, the top public school where Kate and Pippa Middleton studied, put the entire village up for sale, but the sale was blocked by residents who hired lawyers to challenge the college’s position. However, earlier this year, it was discovered that the village was put up for sale again by the trustees of Marlborough College. The sale to the William Pears Group was confirmed this week. The Pears family has been investing in residential and commercial property since 1952 and takes a long-term approach to financing. Villagers are concerned about the new owners’ plans for the village and the possibility of losing their homes. Many of the homes in the village are let on assured shorthold tenancies, and families have been living there for generations. Councillor Jordan has emphasized the need for security of tenure for the residents. In 2011, sports magnate and boxing promoter Barry Hearn showed interest in buying the village and assured the locals that they would not be evicted. However, the sale did not go through at the time. The 1,200-acre Trevalga estate was previously owned by Gerald Curgenven, a former pupil of Marlborough College, who left the land to the school with the instruction to “preserve it” in 1959. The estate includes six let farms, 17 other homes, and various properties. The village has a rich history dating back to the Domesday Book in 1086.
