Most weddings experience some level of tension prior to the big day, and Harry and Meghan’s fairy tale ceremony in 2018 was no exception. Various disagreements arose, including debates over bridesmaid dresses and tiaras. There was also uncertainty surrounding whether the bride’s father, Thomas Markle, would be well enough to attend the wedding. Ultimately, Prince Charles stepped in and walked Meghan down the aisle at St George’s Chapel. However, one of the more peculiar disputes involved the groom’s beard, or lack thereof, as recounted by Prince Harry in his bestselling memoir, Spare.
According to Harry, his older brother attempted to prohibit him from wearing a beard, claiming that it was inappropriate for Meghan. In his book, Harry explains, “A beard was thought by some to be a clear violation of protocol and long-standing norms, especially since I was getting married in my Army uniform. Beards were forbidden in the British Army.” Harry felt that his beard brought him a sense of calm and approached his grandmother, the late Queen, in person to ask for her permission to keep it. She granted his request, but when Harry informed his brother, William was less than pleased.
In Harry’s account, William argued that it went against military rules and expressed his disapproval, leading to a heated discussion that spanned over a week both in person and over the phone. Harry attempted to persuade William by providing a quick history lesson using Google, showing images of past royal ancestors who had worn beards while in uniform, such as Edward VII and George V. William, however, remained adamant and even ordered Harry to shave off his beard.
Frustrated, Harry questioned why it mattered, only to receive the response, “Because I wasn’t allowed to keep my beard.” Harry concluded that William disliked the idea of him enjoying a privilege that he had been denied. It’s worth noting that William has never publicly commented on these claims or shared his side of the story.
