Syracuse, N.Y. — If you thought Week 1 of college football would be boring in any way, you were wrong.
The ACC’s slate of games alone featured blowout wins, two “upsets,” a second-half comeback in a conference game and even overtime.
Here’s how the conference maps out in our power rankings after each team’s first game of the season.
1. FSU (1-0, 0-0 ACC)
Last week: W 45-24 vs. No. 5 LSU
This week: vs. Southern Miss; 8:30 p.m.; ACCN
Outside of Colorado’s comeback win over TCU, No. 8 Florida State’s dominant performance over No. 5 LSU was one of the most thrilling games of the week.
The Seminoles will have no problem handling Southern Miss on their own turf in Week 2 and will likely stay atop the conference rankings at least until their meeting with Clemson — though that’s feeling less like a marquee matchup after the Tigers’ opening week result.
2. North Carolina (1-0, 0-0 ACC)
Last week: W 31-17 vs. South Carolina
This week: vs. Appalachian State; 5:15 p.m.; ACCN
UNC scored first and stayed consistent throughout its opener against USC. The Gamecocks led for all of 2:26 in the second Quarter, and that was it.
The absence of wide receiver Tez Walker continues to be a storyline for the Tar Heels. He is still seeking a transfer waiver from the NCAA, which considers him a two-time transfer and therefore ineligible for immediate playing eligibility, and has a Thursday meeting with the committee considering his case.
3. Duke (1-0, 1-0 ACC)
Last week: W 28-7 vs. No. 9 Clemson
This week: vs. Lafayette; 6 p.m.; ACCNX/ESPN+
Duke earned one of its biggest wins in program history behind quarterback Riley Leonard and a defense that forced three key turnovers from Clemson’s new offense. While it wasn’t projected Clemson would blow out the Blue Devils, this result was certainly a surprise.
Duke is now on its way to a 4-0 start with its next three games being Lafayette, Northwestern and Connecticut before a home game against Notre Dame.
4. Clemson (0-1, 0-1 ACC)
Last week: L 28-7 at Duke
This week: vs. Charleston Southern; 2:15 p.m.; ACCN
Clemson put up 422 yards off offense but only 7 points in their season-opening loss. It’s the first time the Tigers have lost to the Blue Devils since 2004.
It’d be silly to count Clemson, which has a 60-9 record over the past five seasons, out of the running for a spot in the ACC title game after one loss. It’s also going to be hard to forget that this is how the season started.
5. Pittsburgh (1-0, 0-0 ACC)
Last week: W 45-7 vs. Wofford
This week: vs. Cincinnati; 6:30 p.m.; CW Network
Pitt’s run game was the focus in its season opener, with four of six touchdowns coming on the ground. It spread the ball to three different rushing scorers and eight total ball carriers, including quarterback Phil Jurkovec, who rushed for 41 yards and a TD on seven carries.
Like Syracuse, though, Pitt racked up a significant amount of penalties that will need to be tidied up once heading into more serious game play.
6. Miami (1-0, 0-0 ACC)
Last week: W 38-3 vs. Miami (Ohio)
This week: vs. Texas A&M; 3:30 p.m.; ABC
Miami got off to an explosive start offensively with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Van Dyke to Colbie Young in the opening two minutes but then relied on kicker Andres Borregales to build up the rest of the first-half lead.
It hosts a ranked Texas A&M program this week which ran up 52 points on New Mexico, a Top 50 scoring defense at the end of last season.
7. N.C. State (1-0, 0-0 ACC)
Last week: W 24-14 at Connecticut
This week: vs. Notre Dame; Noon; ABC
Though it came out with a win, N.C. State struggled at times on the road against Connecticut. The Wolfpack didn’t lead by more than 3 points until late in the third quarter, and even once they pulled more comfortably ahead, weren’t able to pull ahead anymore in a scoreless fourth quarter.
Notre Dame will certainly be a test of whether N.C. State could actually finish near the top of the pack in the ACC this year.
8. Syracuse (1-0, 0-0 ACC)
Last week: W 65-0 vs. Colgate
This week: vs. Western Michigan; 3:30 p.m.; ACCNX/ESPN+
Western Michigan is led this season by former Louisville offensive coordinator Lance Taylor. His Cardinals offense last season was stymied by the Orange, scoring just one touchdown.
It doesn’t project to be quite the blowout Syracuse managed against Colgate, but SU should have little problem bumping its win record up again Saturday.
9. Louisville (1-0, 1-0 ACC)
Last week: W 39-34 vs. Georgia Tech
This week: vs. Murray State; 7:30 p.m. Thursday; ACCN
The Cardinals were tested by Georgia Tech, which scored 28 points in the second quarter and led from early in that quarter all the way through the beginning of the fourth.
Louisville rallied in the end, and former SU running back Jawhar Jordan popped off a 74-yard touchdown run to help with that comeback.
10. Wake Forest (1-0, 0-0 ACC)
Last week: W 37-17 vs. Elon
This week: vs. Vanderbilt; 11 a.m.; ACCN
Wake Forest’s new QB Mitch Griffith — the Demon Deacons’ first in five years since Sam Hartman’s departure — showed off his canon of an arm in his team’s Week 1 win. Griffith had touchdown passes for 18, 33 and 69 yards in the first half and had 329 yards on 19 completions with just one interception.
Griffith was sacked four times by Elon, which creates some concern around Wake Forest’s O-line, but overall the offense seems to be missing a smaller step than expected in Hartman’s absence.
11. Georgia Tech (0-1, 0-1 ACC)
Last week: L 39-34 vs. Louisville
This week: vs. South Carolina State; 1 p.m.; ACCNX/ESPN+
Georgia Tech played a phenomenal second quarter against Louisville and a good rest of the game. The Yellow Jackets had 282 yards and four touchdowns in that quarter but didn’t score enough
Brent Key’s squad definitely caught some attention, but it’s hard to see them rising much higher than their current spot in the rankings with their schedule.
12. Virginia Tech (1-0, 0-0 ACC)
Last week: W 36-17 vs. Old Dominion
This week: vs. Purdue; Noon; ESPN2
Virginia Tech’s defense was the first to put points on the board with a 24-yard loss safety to end Old Dominion’s second drive of the game.
Though the Hokie offense wouldn’t add to that until the second quarter, it took control from there, finishing the game with 28 of its own points. New quarterback Grant Wells was responsible for three touchdowns through the air and finished the game with 259 passing yards on 17 completions.
13. Boston College (0-1, 0-0 ACC)
Last week: L 27-24 vs. Northern Illinois
This week: vs. Holy Cross; Noon; ACCNX/ESPN+
Boston College came back from a 21-7 deficit early in the fourth quarter to force overtime against Northern Illinois but failed to keep that momentum, only managing a field goal in the extra period and allowing NIU a touchdown.
It was one of three games the Eagles should have been able to add to their win column, making the outlook for the season dreary.
14. Virginia (0-1, 0-0 ACC)
Last week: L 49-13 vs. No. 12 Tennessee
This week: vs. James Madison; Noon; ESPNU
This game was never going to go in Virginia’s favor. But to see 13 points on the board, and not all of them be in garbage time during the final 15, is good for the Cavaliers.
UVA will honor its three football players killed last year in an on-campus shooting during Saturday’s game against fellow Virginia school JMU. It’s the team’s first home contest since losing those players last season.
