Lima, Apr 10 (EFE).- The Private Investment Promotion Agency of Peru (Proinversión) plans to award nine water and sanitation projects in the 2023-2024 period under the Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) modality for almost 1,300 million dollars, the agency reported on Monday.

These works are part of a portfolio of works in water, sewerage and Wastewater Treatment that includes a total of 13 projects promoted by the agency with the aim of benefiting 4.8 million people in 12 departments of the country.

The total portfolio reaches 1,550 million dollars through the PPP modality for projects to be developed in Piura, Cajamarca, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Lima, Ica, Moquegua, Cusco, Junín, San Martín, Loreto and Madre de Dios.

In the period 2023-2024 it includes the wastewater treatment plants (PTAR) of Puerto Maldonado (86 million dollars), Cuzco (44 million dollars), Chincha (70 million dollars), Cajamarca (56 million dollars) , Huancayo (172 million dollars), Tarapoto (106 million dollars) and Trujillo (312 million dollars).

In addition, the Head Works-Phase 1, for 340 million dollars, and the Ilo Desalination Plant, for 110 million dollars.

In this sense, Proinversión adviser Iván Lucich commented that “advance is being made with a clear sense of urgency to help close the gaps in the sanitation sector through PPPs, which ensure the sustainability of infrastructure and services, with high standards quality”.

The agency added that PPPs are “an efficient mechanism that can help close gaps in the provision of drinking water, sewerage and wastewater treatment at the national level” and named Metropolitan Lima and Callao “a success story”. , where wastewater treatment went from 21% in 2012 to more than 90% in 2020.

Currently, of the 100% of the wastewater treated in the Peruvian capital, 84% is processed by the three plants delivered in concession by Proinversión: Taboada, La Chira and Provisur, while the remaining 16% is treated by plants managed by the state Lima Drinking Water and Sewerage Service (Sedapal), he explained.

Lucich commented, in this regard, that “the reduction of the gap in the treatment of residual water in Lima and Callao contributes to improving the health and environment of nine million people” and that “the objective with the PPP portfolio in sanitation is replicate the successful experience of Lima in the 11 more departments”.

Proinversión explained that, to help achieve universal access to sanitation services in the country, the investment required by 2026 is approximately 41,000 million soles (10,789 million dollars).
