With the goal of marketing at better prices in the United States and other countries, the government of New Lion puts in sight the garlic export that is produced in the south of the entity, this will increase the income of rural families, said Marco González Valdez, secretary of Regional and Agricultural Development of the state.

In a meeting with members of the Garlic Producers Cooperative Society, located in the community of La Chona, in the municipality of AramberriGonzález Valdez said: “The government of Samuel García is going to bet on you.”

“Why do we throw at export? Well, because they pay more there. So the goal we have is to get you to export. In the United States they don’t know the amount of dollars they pay for garlic and in Canada too, we must find the right channel to get to the other side,” he added.

He explained that the goal of marketing at better prices abroad does not start from scratch, since the state government has transformed 240 hectares of garlic crops, together with a group of agribusinessmen Since the start of the project, they have seen their income rise each season.

“We are talking about a Comprehensive Development Program by the Ministry of Regional and Agricultural Development, which includes support, such as top quality seed; genetic improvement; training and technical advice; organization of the Cooperative Society; manage a credit for 4.8 million pesos for inputs, fertilizers and pesticides, as well as add them to the National Garlic Product System Committee, obtaining better prices.

The objective of export garlic from Nuevo León, has real possibilities of success, as was achieved with the tomato production of the Horticultural Technoparks in the south of the state: Sandía and Terranova, located in Aramberri; El Pronghorn, in Galeana, and Tanquecillos, in Doctor Arroyo.

“We have the success story of the producers of four Horticultural Technoparks in the south, where thanks to the support, advice and permanent accompaniment of the state government, they export thousands of tons of tomatoes each year, with a significant economic benefit for thousands of families in that area. region,” he said.

“We will do the same with the garlic producers in the south of the state, as long as they remain organized and united, and allow us to continue supporting them, training and jointly monitoring the route of objectives that we are drawing to meet the objective of exporting and that they earn much more money,” he stressed.

Mexico is the ninth world exporter of garlic, it is cultivated in 21 states, the main ones being Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Puebla, Baja California and Sonora. At the end of 2020, production reached 86,500 tons, with an increase of 4.3%, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader).

The Comprehensive Program applied by the aforementioned Secretariat to increase garlic production in this community began with the delivery of 8 tons of genetically improved seed of the “Tigre” and “Don Fermín” varieties, developed as a team with the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (UANL).

An average production per hectare of 11.5 tons has been achieved. Farmers’ earnings have gone from an average of 70,000 pesos per hectare per season, to more than 120,000 pesos.
