A few days before the presidential initiative for electoral reform is ruled in the Chamber of Deputies, the president of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Lorenzo Córdova Vianello, called for the defense of democratic institutions, which are the heritage of Mexicans.

“All together, let us defend an institution that is a heritage of Mexicans and, with self-criticism, let us propose improvements, but let us not allow this institution that cost us so much to build to fall into the hands of a political faction that is legitimate and that came to power by the path of the polls thanks to the work that has been carried out”, stated Córdoba Vianello.

During the session of the Executive General Board of the INE, the president counselor considered that in several countries of the world there is an onslaught against the electoral authorities characterized by misinformation, personal and institutional attacks and budget suffocation.

He stressed that, in this context, it is essential to vindicate the civic culture of citizenship.

“A citizenry with a precarious civic culture is a citizenry that is prone to the most undemocratic expressions that can be imagined,” he warned.

“At the INE we are guardians of democracy, but we are also responsible for maintaining the constitutional order, which has been violated by another institution,” he established.

Lorenzo Córdova vindicated his constitutional responsibility, as president of the INE, to defend the institution against “fallacies” that spread from other institutions and powers; among them that the INE is the most expensive electoral institution in the world, or that in Mexico the elections are the most expensive in the world.

“Let’s stop the discourse of fraud and the disqualification of the electoral authority and take care of an institution that belongs to all Mexicans,” he invited.

Finally, Córdova Vianello reiterated that this body will file before the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), an action of unconstitutionality against the recommendation issued by the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) calling for the “transformation” of the electoral institute.
