The International Court of Justice rejects Myanmar’s objections and affirms its authority to hear the Rohingya case | Politics news

The International Court of Justice has rejected Myanmar’s objections to the Rohingya genocide case brought against it, paving the way for the case to be heard in full.

Myanmar says Gambia, which filed the case, has no legal grounds to do so before the United Nations International Tribunal.

The Court – which is the highest judicial body in the United Nations and is based in The Hague – announced the rejection of the objections submitted by the Myanmar delegation regarding the lawsuit filed by The Gambia; The West African country in 2019.

legal arguments

The International Court of Justice said it was qualified to hear the case on several legal arguments to continue its course, and it may take years for the court to issue its ruling.

“We are happy that the court has done justice,” said Gambia’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Daouda Jallow, after the hearing.

Myanmar argued that Gambia, which had brought the case, had no legal grounds to do so before the ICC, which the court rejected.

Aung San Suu Kyi was the former civilian ruler of Burma and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize; She herself presented Burma’s arguments before the International Court of Justice in late 2019 when the case was first heard.

Aung San Suu Kyi was overthrown in a military coup in February 2021, and she is currently under arrest.

It is noteworthy that 740,000 refugees from the Muslim Rohingya ethnicity have fled the country to camps in Bangladesh and neighboring countries, to escape atrocities committed by the military and widespread violence that Washington described last March as “genocide”.
