An armed individual opened fire at a western Maryland manufacturing company on Thursday, killing three people, before the suspected shooter and a state trooper were wounded in a confrontation, authorities said.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that three victims were found dead at Columbia Machine Inc. in Smithsburg and a fourth person was seriously injured. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle and was located by Maryland State Police, according to the release.

The suspect and an officer were injured in an exchange of gunfire, police said. Both receive medical attention for their injuries.

Gov. Larry Hogan said the man began firing at the officers until at least one officer fired back, wounding the suspect.

“The suspect fired and struck a state trooper in the shoulder, who returned fire and shot him,” Hogan told reporters.

Authorities had no information on whether the suspect and victims were employees of the business where the shooting took place, Police Sgt. Carly Hose said at a news conference.

Family members of company workers gathered at a fire station in downtown Smithsburg Thursday night to await information about their loved ones. They refused to speak to a reporter.

Hours after the shooting, several police officers were still at the scene. Police had closed off the street in front of the Columbia Machine Inc. facility.

At the moment there was no response from the company to messages sent seeking comment.

Smithsburg, a community of nearly 3,000 people, is 75 miles (120 kilometers) northwest of Baltimore. The company’s facility was in a sparsely populated area northeast of the city center, with a church, several businesses, and farmland nearby.
