Britons took to the streets and parks today to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with bunting-filled parties, picnics and family fun days – on the second day of festivities to mark Her Majesty’s 70 years on the throne.

As the country basked in glorious sunshine, communities came together to host princess dress up competitions, tugs of war and eat plenty of cake decorated in red, white and blue.

In Nansledan, Newquay, a Platinum Jubilee ‘picnic extravaganza’ is taking place today with plenty of entertainment for those looking to spend the bank holiday Friday toasting to the Queen.

The party has been good fun for all the family with children pictured playing tug of war with a rope covered in Union Jack flags, dogs taking part in a show, live music, bingo, a royal quiz, and plenty of Lady Vale cream teas on offer for locals joining in on the celebrations

Up and down the country, local streets have been covered in red, white and blue just like they did for Her Majesty’s Coronation in June 1953.

Families and neighbours have all joined together to celebrate the Queen in her 70 long years reigning Great Britain, and the country as a whole has pulled no punches when it comes to decorating with miles of bunting and Jubilee memorabilia.

Today’s royal celebrations began with a service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral in central London. At 10.50am, Great Paul, the largest church bell in the country at 16.5tons, pealed to herald service of thanksgiving for the Queen’s long reign.

Her Majesty had been hoping to be able to attend the service but has since had to pull out after experiencing ‘discomfort’ on the first day of celebrations. Buckingham Palace has also announced the the Queen will not be attending the Epsom Derby on Saturday.

‘I’ve always been a strong supporter of the Queen so we wanted to do something to celebrate the 70 years,’ he said. ‘We were thinking what to do and we decided to paint the shop.

‘We only decided to do it on Sunday. It’s more impressive than we imagined. It took us two days, we did 12 hours each day – I’m aching now.

‘We painted it twice, we had to do two coats. We do really like it and would like to keep aspects of it. We’re so lucky to have such a great flag.

‘We’d have done it twice as quick if we didn’t have to keep waving every two seconds, I could’ve done with a third waving arm! It’s got to be one of the biggest Union Jacks in the country. You can see it for miles.

‘As the shop is 65 years old we’ve had some customers all that time, some have brought in their children’s children as well.’
