Inclusion Begins with Acceptance

Respecting the rights and humanity of all autistic people.

April is Autism Acceptance Month and, globally, on April 2nd we recognized Autism Acceptance day. The Human Origins Foundation is celebrating Autistic culture and community this month!

Why Acceptance? About 1% of the world’s population is autistic — over 75,000,000! Autism acceptance means respecting the rights and humanity of all autistic people. Awareness is knowing that autistic people exist and acceptance is taking the necessary action to ensure the voices of the autistic community are centered. This looks like recognizing the commonalities and differences that autistic people share, recognizing that diversity is inherent to humanity, and ensuring TRUE inclusion is reached.

During Autism Acceptance Month and ALL months, the Foundation is committed to centering the perspectives of autistic people — including our autistic members; one of the founders of The Human Origins Foundation is autistic. We recognize that while Autism Acceptance Month is an opportunity to change the conversation around autism and shift the conversation away from “autism awareness” language that presents autism as a threat to be countered or a disease to be cured.

Education and awareness must happen in order to have acceptance. Autism presents differently from one person to the next which is why Autism is a spectrum. Autism is also different in men and women. Please educate yourself by talking with autistic people and getting to know them. You will see that autistic people don’t need to be fixed.

What can Foundation supporters do? Here are some options:

  • Check out ASAN’s book, “Welcome to the Autistic Community”
  • Learn about autism FROM autistic people
  • Prioritize and center autistic voices — not just during April, but always!
  • Take the Pledge for Autistic Inclusion and ensure that autistic self-advocates get to be a part of every conversation about autism
  • Share a list of resources all about autism.

Remember that inclusion begins with acceptance! Please encourage your family, friends, co-workers, and associates to join The Human Origins Foundation on our mission to raise the knowledge, build the community, and move the world forward with awareness and acceptance, true equity, and inclusion to create a universally accessible workplace and world. While progress has been made over the last eleven years, work remains to be done. That is why the Foundation loudly and proudly recognizes Autism Acceptance.

Take the Pledge
