The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) expressed enthusiasm for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to merge Opposition Parties in a bid to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
At a press conference held in Abuja on Tuesday, the Acting National Chairman of NNPP, Abba Ali, described Atiku Abubakar’s suggestion as a “welcome development” and a patriotic move to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy from the potential consolidation of power into a one-party state.
Ali highlighted the historical precedent, pointing out that a similar merger of opposition parties before the 2015 elections had led to the defeat of the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the APC.
“Just recently, the former Vice-President of the Federal Republic, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was reported to have called for a merger of opposition parties as a way of checkmating the inordinate drive of the ruling APC towards a one-party state and protecting our hard-earned democracy,” said Ali.
“The NNPP sees this call from Atiku Abubakar as patriotic and a welcome development for which we unreservedly commend him,” he added.
The NNPP not only expressed support for Atiku’s proposal but also reiterated its commitment to the initiative, considering it a necessary step for opposition parties to present a formidable front in the upcoming elections.
However, Ali emphasized that the NNPP is approaching this issue with a broader perspective, taking into account all factors inherent in such a merger.
“As we stated earlier, while we fully embrace this initiative and applaud it as a matter of necessity, the NNPP is looking at this issue from a much larger perspective and considering all factors inherent in it,” Ali remarked.
