NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court voiced concern over a video of two women being paraded naked in Manipur, quoting the incident as ‘simply unacceptable.’

The Apex Court has acknowledged this by ordering that the Central Government, as well as the State Government of Manipur, submit a report by July 28 detailing the actions taken to arrest the culprits and the preventative measures being implemented by July 28.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud asserted, “Regardless of the video’s origin in the month of May, its time of occurrence holds no significance,”.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta echoed the Chief Justice of India’s grave concerns, “The government shares the same deep revulsion over the incident, considering such actions utterly intolerable.” Mehta further disclosed that the government has swiftly undertaken significant measures to apprehend the culprits following the video’s emergence, with the court being kept informed of every development in the matter.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his profound shock upon witnessing the distressing video depicting the assault on women in Manipur. In a resolute pledge to the nation, the Prime Minister asserted, “The incident in Manipur has brought shame to the 1.4 billion Indians. I want to assure the people of India that the perpetrators will not elude justice.” The PM made this solemn statement while addressing reporters just before the commencement of the monsoon session in Parliament.

The viral video, which surfaced on Wednesday, has sent shockwaves across the nation, revealing an appalling scene of two women from opposing communities being subjected to the indignity of a naked parade by a group of men from the other side. The footage further exposed the victims enduring constant molestation, igniting nationwide outrage and drawing widespread condemnation from all corners of the country.

As reports emerged, it has been revealed that the primary suspect has already been apprehended in Manipur’s Thoubal district, a development that may lead to further revelations in the ongoing investigation.

In an effort to contain the widespread sharing of the video, the Central government has issued directives to Twitter and other social media platforms, underscoring the crucial need for adherence to Indian laws during the ongoing investigation.
