Emmy 2022: Zendaya Wins Her Second Award, First Black Woman To Do So

Highlights:

  • In 2020, Zendaya became the youngest ever Emmy winner for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
  • Zendaya, in 2022, won another Emmy for the same series in the same category
  • Zendaya is the only black woman to have won 2 Emmy awards as a lead actress in a drama series
  • Zendaya was nominated for 4 Emmys for the second season on Euphoria

At the 74th annual Emmy Awards Ted Lasso from Apple TV+ and Succession from HBO become the most nominated titles for the year with 20 and 25 nominations respectively. Jason Sudeikis from Ted Lasso yet again took the top honour for actor in a comedy series, while the creator of Abbott Elementary, Quinta Brunson, won for comedy series writing.

Having said that, it was the 26 year old young Hollywood star Zendaya who created history by becoming the first Black woman to win Emmy for Lead Actress in a drama series two times.

For people who are unaware, Zendaya was nominated for four Emmys for her work on the second season of Euphoria. Of these, two were for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics from songs she co-wrote for the show, one for producing, and one for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

What makes Zendaya’s win a huge feat is the fact she became the first Black woman to win Emmy for lead actress in a drama series twice.

Back in 2020, she became the youngest-ever Emmy winner for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, for Euphoria, and her nominations this year made her the youngest two-time nominee in the category.

What also makes Zendaya’s win huge is who she was up against, other nominees for the Lead Actress in a Drama Series were Jodie Comer for Killing Eve, Laura Linney for Ozark, Melanie Lynskey for Yellowjackets, Reese Witherspoon for The Morning Show, and Sandra Oh for Killing Eve.

Other winners at Emmy 2022 were:

  • Amanda Seyfried won lead actress in a limited series for her portrayal of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s The Dropout
  • Jennifer Coolidge won the Emmy for Best supporting actress in a limited series for her role in White Lotus.

Zendaya was not the only black woman creating history at Emmy 2022 though, Sheryl Lee Ralph, too, made history by becoming the second black winner in the history of the supporting actress in a comedy series category for her role in Abbott Elementary.

She became the first since Jackee Harry for 227 in 1987.

Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein won for the second year in a row, the award’s first back-to-back winner since Jeremy Piven for Entourage in 2007.
